	Youth at the United Nations: 12 August - International Youth Day
		A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives.
		The General Assembly on 17 December 1999 in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
		The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond, adopted by the General Assembly in 1995 (resolution 50/81).

	About SA - Public Holidays
		In apartheid South Africa this day became known as Sharpeville Day and although not part of the official calendar of public holidays the event was commemorated among anti-apartheid movements.
		This day commemorates 9 August 1956 when women participating in a national march petitioned against pass laws (legislation that required African persons to carry a document on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’).
		In apartheid South Africa 16 December was known as Day of the Vow, as the Voortrekkers in preparation for the battle took a Vow before God that they would build a church and that they and their descendants would observe the day as a day of thanksgiving should they be granted victory.

	Youth Day, 3 Decades of Struggle.
		Today is Youth day… a public holiday in South Africa and even more significant today as it is the 30 year anniversary in which Hector Pieterson, a 12-year-old student, had died on June 16, 1976 following the Soweto protest of schools imposing Afrikaans as the official teaching language.
		Many say that this was the day in which the road to our freedom was born, since the Apartheid government had for one day forced its will and its ideology onto the world… and the world violently resisted.
		I don’t hold this view though, I believe the road to our freedom was born the day someone stood up and said “No.” Either aloud or with his/her heart, and the ball rolled from there, the first slave, the first injustice is what set Apartheid on its road to destruction.
