Youth rights movement in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The youth rights movement, also described as "youth liberation," is a nascent grass-roots movement whose aim is to fight against ageism (also known as adult chauvinism) and for the self-determination civil rights for persons "under the age of majority"-- 18 in most countries.
Youth rights is different from children's rights, and the two movements are sometimes at odds with each other (again, for curious reasons).
The children's rights movement advocates changes that are often restrictive, protection oriented, and paternalistic, that is, done for children rather than by children.

Youth rights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Youth rights refers to a set of philosophies intended to enhance civil rights for young people.
As opposed to children's rights groups, which tend to advocate entitlements for young people and favor paternalistic handling of minors by government, youth rights organizers seek to enhance the role of young people in society through equal rights.
These philosophies were espoused by John Caldwell Holt and others who have come to view society's treatment of children as hypocritical and anachronistic.

Perhaps a system does need to have an automatic point for adult rights to begin based on something as impersonal as age (except in special cases), but a more perfect system might see all people bringing their case for emancipation before a court before obtaining their "adult" rights.

Convention on the Rights of the Child   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The human rights of children and the standards to which all governments must aspire in realizing these rights for all children, are most concisely and fully articulated in one international human rights treaty: the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
It spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere — without discrimination — have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights — civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights.

Human Rights Watch welcomed the settlement, which would abolish the current practice of shackling youth in spread-eagled fashion as a form of punishment, known as "four-pointing." It would also strictly limit the placement of youth in isolation cells and would restrict the use of handcuffs on youth to times when they are being transported.
The use of pseudonyms to identify youth is common in litigation, particularly when they remain in detention.
In addition to "four-pointing" juvenile detainees, guards had routinely chained youth inside their cells and placed children in isolation twenty-three hours a day for extended periods of time, according to youth in detention and their parents.
