Topic: Yu Dafu

In the News (Sat 28 Nov 09)

Yu Dafu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yu Ta-fu, pinyin Yu Dafu was a 1920's Chinese short story writer.
He was born in 1896 in Fu-yang in the Chekiang province, and died in September 1945 in Sumatra (in the Dutch East Indies).
In 1923, after an attack of tuberculosis, Yu Dafu directed his attention to the welfare of the masses, and in 1926, due to conflicts with Communists in the Society, he was forced to resign.

China and Inner Asia Sessions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Yu Dafu is best known for his early confessional stories of sexuality, psychological torment and nationalism.
Yu's literary output became increasingly dominated with essays often described as being traditional in style, most often appearing in the magazines of the decidedly unrevolutionary Analects (Lunyu) group.
In this paper I look more at Yu Dafu's later essay writing as the cultivation of something new, something the author was moving toward, rather than away from, and which was part of a larger modernist remolding of tradition.

Both Yu Dafu and Guo Muoro are often dismissed today in mainland criticism as narcissistic male writers, banished to the self-indulgent realms of their fictional writings.
The conflation of "masculinity" with male ideology, I further argue, displaces the individual male subject with the abstraction of an all-encompassing notion of dominating masculinity.
I will examine how Yu Dafu's Lost Lamb (1930) and Guo Muoro's Miss Germeiluo (1924), in dialogue with their other works and the criticism they have received, demonstrate the uncertainty of male subjectivity, a subjectivity which quivers on the brink of losing control and blushes at its poignantly felt lack.

In modern era, noted Chinese literati, Liang Qichao, Hu Shi, Guo Moruo, and Yu Dafu all made their great efforts to advocate the writing of literary biography.
Yu Dafu claims that ¡°At present Chinese auto/biographies are confined to have a less wide choice and still simulate stereotypes of the classical style, merely eulogizing one¡¯s virtue and achievements, much dull and depressed¡±.
Yu Dafu¡¯s autobiography, fiction, and prose with life-writing nature are good examples of his own manifestation.

Yu's protagonists are almost always lonely and bitter individuals, hypochondriac and full of self-contempt, lost in a chaotic world looking for love, understanding and the right ideology, unable to believe in the old values and wary of new ones.
Yu's straightforward prose is of a disturbing actuality today, the more it is astonishing that only very few translations of his texts are readily available in the West (there is, on the average, one "Collection of Short Stories" per language, almost always out of print).
Yu, probably one of the most important modern Chinese writers, sure would deserve more attention outside of China.
