 Animefringe: February 2005 - Reviews - Yu-Gi-Oh (Uncut) Vol. 1
No, this release is for the fans who are ready to give Yu-Gi-Oh a shot.
It has all the components of a standard blockbuster TV series, with plots that are at times predictable, characters that aren't terribly original at first, and average animation.
However, the drama in the series is rather entertaining, and in many ways, it is rather self-conscious of its own state as a mainstream children's show.

The second series, Duellist Kingdom, is not as good, and is actually quite lame in parts, because the focus is entirely on the card game and there isn't anywhere near as much dark undercurrents (or, in the case of some parts of Battle Ship, not-so-under undercurrents...).
Like the series which wasn't aired, it had occasional profanity, which was very mild, but it made the dialogue from certain individuals of the show sound more real.
Of course, the 1st series that was never aired in North America is much, much better, because the focus isn't solely on the card game.
