Yufuin (湯布院町; -cho) is a town located in Oita District, Oita, Japan (大分県大分郡湯布院町).
Yufuin is among the number 3 Spa town in the country in terms of natural hot spring spa (温泉 Onsen) water capacity, resulting in a local economy based on domestic tourism and hot-spring bathing.
In local politics, a controversial decision to join Yufuin with 2 nearby towns and rename the result "Yufu-shi" (effective in October 2005) resulted in the recall of the mayor and a mayoral re-election in March 2005.

Surrounded by the Suo Channel and Honshu Island to the north, the Iyo Channel and Shikoku Island to the east, it is bordered by Miyazaki Prefecture to the south, and Fukuoka Prefecture and Kumamoto Prefecture to the west.
Despite further oppositions, on October 1, 2005 the towns of Hasama, Shonai and Yufuin (all from Oita District) merged to form the new city of Yufu.

Oita, with a population of 427,000, is the capital and largest city in the prefecture.
In the 16th century, Oita was very much influenced by trade with Portugal and became one of the first areas of Japan to be exposed to Western medicine and stage drama.

One evening we went to a small town called Yufuin.
Later in the week, we went to Oita to see a soccer game and pic up a rental car for a trip down to Kagoshima.
The Oita soccer team is called Trinita (the locals pronounce it TOH-ree-nee-tah).

Mexican food is not very popular in Japan, so I was surprised to find a taco truck (a broken down k-jidosha) while walking around the quaint town of Yufuin, Oita.
My father orders a taco from the old lady, and finds out that she learned how to make tacos in Mexico.
