It's not the style, or the story construction - although both of those help, because they bring a certain mundane verisimilitude to the work that compounds the horror - but mainly it's the universal concepts, and those fears that will always be relevant.
AJ: Yuggoth is the name given to Pluto by certain alien races, some of whom live or have lived on the planet at one time.
We kind of worked backwards from the title, so Yuggoth in this series has become a little more central and important than it was in Lovecraft's own stories.

Comic Book Resources - CBR News - The Comic Wire
This July Johnston returns to familiar ground in the Lovecraft inspired "Yuggoth Creatues," a new three-issue series from Avatar Press with contributions from eight different artists.
Before getting to the contents of "Yuggoth Creatures," Johnston provided CBR News with something of a primer on the work and style of H.P. Lovecraft, a literary master from the early 20th century who's best know for his work in the horror genre.
Moving on to "Yuggoth Creatures," Johnston said the series is not connected to another similarly titled series offered by Avatar, "Alan Moore's Yuggoth Cultures." It borrowed from the name because the writer thought it was a cool play on words and Alan gave his permission to make the pun.

The Whisperer in Darkness by H. P. Lovecraft
The blasphemies which appeared on earth, it was hinted, came from the dark planet Yuggoth, at the rim of the solar system; but this was itself merely the populous outpost of a frightful interstellar race whose ultimate source must lie far outside even the Einsteinian space-time continuum or greatest known cosmos.
It is, as we have inferred, the object mystically hinted at as "Yuggoth" in certain ancient and forbidden writings; and it will soon be the scene of a strange focussing of thought upon our world in an effort to facilitate mental rapport.
The bare, compact cerebral matter was then immersed in an occasionally replenished fluid within an ether-tight cylinder of a metal mined in Yuggoth, certain electrodes reaching through and connecting at will with elaborate instruments capable of duplicating the three vital faculties of sight, hearing, and speech.

The reason it didn't appear as scheduled from Creation Books is because Alan left the only copy of the MS in a London taxi on November 5th 1993.

YUGGOTH CULTURES was a three-issue series featuring many previously unpublished, out-of-print or hard to find works by Alan Moore - including the long-lost NIGHTJAR, drawn by Bryan Talbot.
YUGGOTH CULTURES is now available in a collected edition, featuring the entire contents of the original series plus fifty pages of bonus material, including an essay by Moore, new artwork and interviews.
The title is taken from what was to be an HP Lovecraft tribute book by Moore, with each piece based upon the stanza titles from HPL's poem THE FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH.

 Mi-go, the Fungi from Yuggoth
Description: In Lovecraft's own words, mi-go are "pinkish things about five feet long; with crustaceous bodies bearing vast pairs of dorsal fins or membranous wings and several sets of articulate limbs, and with a sort of convoluted ellipsoid, covered with multitudes of very short antenna, where a head would ordinarily be" ("The Whisperer in Darkness").
They are fungal creatures, not animal life, hence their designation as "the fungi from Yuggoth," Yuggoth being an arcane name for Pluto.
Their main form of communication with others of their race is through subtle and complex alteration of the color of the creature's head-like appendage.

 Dream Gates: the Yuggoth working
It is this facet of dream-magic which we decided to explore, as a development of our earlier work in creating an astral sabbat and exploring the Cthulhu-R’Lyeh axis.
The broad aim of the Yuggoth working was to open up a gateway between the gestalt of the Nyarlathotep Coven and Yuggoth/the Mi-Go.
This would serve as a launching point for individual and group astral exploration (ingress) and also the evocation or manifestation of trans-Yuggothian entities and symbols into the group’s magico-mythic space (egress).
