Shintaro Ishihara - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shintaro Ishihara (石原 慎太郎 Ishihara Shintarō; born September 30, 1932), author, outspoken and controversial Japanese nationalist, populist, and current governor of Tokyo, was born in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan.
Ishihara was born in Kobe, grew up in Zushi, and attended Hitotsubashi University, where he graduated in 1956.
Ishihara's younger brother Yujiro Ishihara played the lead role in the screen adaptation of the novel, and the two soon became the center of a youth-oriented cult.

Moreover he is famous rather than infamous; he is known for his achievements and for possessing opinions (and expressing them) rather than for being caught with his hands on the family silver, as seems to be the primary reason most politicians achieve household-name status in Japan.
For a long time famous for being the brother of actor and nationalist Yujiro Ishihara, Ishihara reached the political high ground in the 1980s and served as Minister of Transport.
Ishihara felt humiliated in front of all his friends and neighbors, and has never forgotten it to this day.

Ishihara Shintaro was born in 1932 to a wealthy family and survived the war years with relatively little hardship.
Yujiro was a student at Keio University during his brother’s rise to fame, and originally appeared on the set of Taiyo no kisetsu not as an actor, but as a model and dialog coach for the actors playing the main characters (Sato 322).
But while many aspects of the Ishihara’s lifestyle differed from those of their fans, teenagers still responded positively by adopting other markers of style and identity in the novels and films that were more available for imitation because the novels and films fostered such a strong sense of authenticity.

Asia Times: Tokyo voters elect U.S. critic Ishihara as governor
Ishihara, who wrote the controversial ''The Japan That Can Say 'No''' with then Sony Corp. Chairman Akio Morita in 1989, won about 1.65 million votes, or 30 percent of the total, according to NHK.
Ishihara is best known for his broadsides against Japan's reliance on the U.S for defense and his claims that the U.S. campaign to get Japan to open industries more to foreign competition is racially motivated.
Ishihara was first elected to Japan's upper house in 1968.

 Profile of Shintaro Ishihara
John Nathan describes Ishihara as “a national hero and for many Japanese an appealing alternative to the party hacks who led the government throughout the nineties, while the economy collapsed and scandals involving fraud, bribery, and collusion among government ministers and yakuza bosses toppled one cabinet after another.
In the fall of 1955, when he was a twenty-three year-old college student, Ishihara wrote a short novel, “Season of the Sun,” that won the Akutagawa Prize, “the gateway to a career as a serious writer in Japan.” He had never written a novel before and wrote it in three days.
Ishihara has a suite of offices on the seventeenth floor of the gargantuan Tokyo City Hall; a forty-five-story twin tower built in 1987 by Kenzo Tange.

Ishihara's thoughts are controversial, and even though I do not like the thought of it, they paralled what was in the back of most people's minds.
I'll reiterate this again, Ishihara's a nutter of a man. His xenophobic views are baseless and archaic, but he does well as governor of Asia's most economically important city.

 Shadow Hunters (1972)
Shadow Hunters is a fun and frivolous, grind house-grade chanbara movie that happens to be one of the last movies starring once-great Japanese screen icon Yujiro Ishihara, the leading figure in the "Nikkatsu action" phenomenon of the late '50s and early '60s.
Ishihara portrays ronin Jubei Muroto, one of three "Shadow Hunters" committed to the extermination of ninja and "grass" (secret ninja) employed by the weakened Tokugawa shogunate to spy on and ruin regional clans accused of withholding support.
Having "followed their noses, drawn by the scent of blood," the stern Jubei, the crass swordsman "Sunlight" (Ryohei Uchida) and their subdued and facially-scarred companion Moonlight (Mikio Narita) come to the aid of the Izushi clan when it's targeted by the Chief Elder (Tetsuro Tanba) in Edo after a large stash of gold is discovered.

Rendered in a series of sharply angled close-ups, their mini-debate sets up Haru for a fall -- he's the idealistic innocent, the boy bound to be hurt, in a skewed way, Sal Mineo to Natsuhisa's James Dean (and indeed, Yujiro Ishihara was deemed "the Japanese James Dean").
That Haru's pain comes embodied in a beautiful girl, Eri (Mie Kitahara, who went on to marry Yujiro Ishihara), is no surprise, though her specific pathology is more complicated than her sinuous surface suggests.
