Honda showcased the breadth of her musical talents on Cibo Matto’s 1999 pop classic, Stereotype A, and she pushes even further into experimental territory here.
Honda is both playful and serene on jaunty snippets like “Single Silver Bullet” with its twinkling piano, silly sound effects, and unpredictable, digressive beats, which serve as transitions into the more substantive tracks.

Honda's second effort for Tzadik's Oracles series, Eucademix, is her strongest solo statement.
And, like most of Honda's work, this album has flashes of humor: "Why Are You Lying to Your Therapist?" asks the title of one spacey, wrong-speed guitar solo track, while "Spooning With Jackknife" is a perfect name for the closing cut's stuttering percussion triggers and disassembled blasts of feedback.
Honda displays an impressive range of experimentation on Eucademix, but it's her talents as a programmer, player, and producer that really sells the album.

True, by now Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori have spent the majority of their lives in New York and enjoy more success in the West than in their native Japan.
The fact that I'd have to include multiple 'similar artists' from several genres to truthfully approximate Yuka Honda's sound should be telling of her musical approach.
Honda attributes this eclecticism to Japan's categorization of foreign music: "Ennio Morricone, Black Sabbath, Justin Timberlake, Julio Iglesias, Billie Holiday, and Debussy would all belong to one genre of imported music." She says.

Yuka has such vast talent and potential as a musician and thinker (I would assume), and the liberation of her music has created such a beautiful mosaic of melody and rythm.
Yuka's A.D.D. is manifest in this collage of color and sound, which is a very refreshing departure from traditional (commercial) song construction.
The best thing about the album, hands down, is the undeniably cute (tho way too small) picture of Yuka on the back, bearing her shoulders from behind a, I don't know, some sort of musical equipment, and looking off into the distance.

For example, it came to me as a shock that Eucademix is actually keyboardist Yuka Honda's second solo album, her first one released in a total media vacuum.
While the music remains unconventional, Honda is unafraid to mix in wordless vocals and bubblegum "la la la's" into her heady mix.
What is promising about "I Dream About You" is that it shows that both Honda and Hatori are uninterested in revisiting past victories, suggesting that the two (either on their own or together) still have the potential to continue breaking down musical conventions long past their 15 minutes of meaningless fame.

The History of Rock Music. Cibo Matto: biography, discography, reviews, links
Cibo Matto, the duo of Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda, specialized in musical satire inspired by junk food and implemented via a casual assembly of jazz, hip-hop, funk and dissonances.
Honda is still a master of the eccentric arrangement, and Hatori is one of the most original rappers in the world, but this time they run the gamut of musical genres without enough personality to excel in any: heavy metal (Blue Train), raga (Working For Vacation), pop (Flowers), soul (King Of Silence).
Yuka Honda's first solo album, Memories Are My Only Witness (Tzadik, 2002), is a display of her eclecticism but the collage of styles is sometimes self-indulgent.

I wasn't too inspired by Yuka's first solo album; it was good, but it was missing a certain oomph.

YUKA HONDA and Miho Hatori, the two women who make up Cibo Matto, are too cute for their own good.
Instead of being recognized as avant-garde innovators, they were often dismissed as a novelty act or compared to Shonen Knife, a far less inventive bubblegum band that has nothing in common with Cibo Matto except that both consist of women born in Japan.
In facing Western stereotypes, Honda has been encouraged and inspired by another misunderstood, ahead-of-her-time Japanese artist and musician, a woman who also happens to be the mother of Honda's boyfriend, Sean Lennon.
