Battle Angel Alita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Battle Angel Alita, called GUNNM (銃夢, "Gun-Mu") in Japan, is a manga (or graphic novel) series created by Yukito Kishiro in 1991.
Yukito Kishiro was not happy with the end of the series, as he was forced to end it prematurely due to external and personal reasons.
Since Kishiro also used the name Jeru for the neighboring city of Salem, Jeru was renamed Ketheres in the translation.

With news that Yukito Kishiro rushed the original ending for health reasons and that he was going back to the Scarpyard to tell what he intended in the first place, I knew 'Last Order' was going to be something special.
Yukito Kishiro returns with fan favorite Battle Angel Alita in Last Order and the art is standard Kishiro excellence.
Kishiro opens up a whole new universe full of interplanetary politics, class disparity and a bit of political commentary on current day events, if one looks hard enough.

With this volume, Yukito Kishiro lifts ramps Alita's story up to a surprising new level, as the final stages of her battle with Desty Nova unfold.
But Yukito Kishiro surpassed my wildest expectations by giving us "Angel's Ascension", the final volume in his post-apocalyptic masterpiece, and it's a volume that not only meets the standards of volumes one and two, but also surpasses them in some ways.
Yukito started the series with two near-perfect volumes ("Battle Angel Alita" and "Tears of an Angel"), and I'm overjoyed that he decided to end the series on the same note.

Yukito's character design is outstanding in AK with each player's essence and intent broadcast clearly in every panel.
Myself, I think it's perfectly acceptable within the constraints of the story and, along with other subtle symbols of male potency, like the great spear used in the dragon hunting, it seems to be used in a really positive way, not unlike the phenomena surrounding Robert Bly's Iron John seminars.
Those symbols are arranged and applied with a minimalist's glee under Yukito's pens and brushes, who uses white space incredibly during the climactic scene of this issue.

 [Manga] Ashen Victor Review
As I’ve already noted on, Kishiro’s style is very dark, and in that he holds power in the realm it‘s used.
Other facets of Kishiro’s art is that of the abstract figurative kind, such as one moment where the Motorball actually grows a mouth and starts giving Snev a pep-talk.
On the other hand it’s nice that Kishiro didn’t pick up any of his old characters as without them Ashen Victor is for one free from any possible loopholes or little things that people with nothing better to would find and point out.

Mangamaniacs Review: Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-16)
With the intense bombardment of dense artwork, gruesome violence, and extended, fast-paced action sequences, it's easy to overlook the strong emotion at the heart of this story, but to do so would be to do yourself and this wonderful series a disservice.
Kishiro does an admirable job of making his characters distinct and recognizable, and the beauty of Alita goes a long way towards creating a sense of pathos in the midst of the hell in which she finds herself living.
And he never loses sight of the emotion at the core of the tale: the complex relationship between Ido and Alita remains a primary motivating force throughout, and the many and varied relationships Alita forms with others in her quest of self-discovery are never given short shrift.

Yukito Kishiro supplies everything that made the previous volumes so amazing, mixing great action and characters, pathos, fl humour, violence and viscera, spirituality...almost everything you could want from a story.
On the plus side, Yukito Kishiro draws with a superb sense of pacing, world class inking, an almost cinematic eye for viewpoint and scope, and the backdrops are clean, clear and as precise as if delineated by a laser.

The story bogs down a bit mid-volume as Kishiro brings the reader up to speed on the status of the solar system, but the hiatus doesn't last for long, as Alita heads out into space with for what promises to be a return home and a major battle.
As Yukito Kishiro's new series unfolds, the reader learns that this story is far larger that the limits of the city in the sky.
By establishing a world outside of Tiphares, Kishiro shows his readers that Battle Angel is not ONLY about fighting, and injects this series with a whole new sense of depth and purpose that lead me to believe it can easily go beyond an eighth or ninth volume.

I couldn't fully recall Yukito Kishiro's gritty, visceral style, shaped to perfection by his enthralling artistic talent.
I could no longer remember the texture of the blood, the gore, the unflinching brutality he illustrated as Alita fought her way from death piled upon a trash heap to victory as a Motorball champion and eventually bringing to light one of the most shocking truths of her entire age.
The thought-provoking questions Kishiro raises concerning the nature of humanity and the presence of the soul were easily one of the most attractive aspects of the series.
