Although she is but minutes old, I have again placed offerings to Ah Puch, the god of death, begging that this child live beyond the two days of shaping so that she may honor our god Yum Kaax, the god of maize, and bring abundance to our crop yield this year.
However, if she is unable to hold the shape, the beautiful elongated slope that represents the finest and most perfect stalks of maize that will please Yum Kaax, then it will be most expensive and require much trading to pay for other less pleasing but honorable treatments.
We will pray and make many more offerings to Yum Kaax so that our crop will be plentiful and we may survive the winter until my daughter can be seen in the field and our corn will be generously blessed as Yum Kaax rejoices at her beauty.

The cult to the three kings is product of the cultural syncretism that the catholic church was obliged to accept during the colonial period.
It was a substitute for the veneration ceremonies to the Gods Yum Chac (Lord of the rain), Yum Kaax (Lord of the fields or of the corn) and Yum Ik (Lord of the wind), that the mayas performed in a small hill in the center of the town.
During the second half of the XVIII century the franciscans built, in this place, the sober and majestic church of the saint kings which, it seems, was connected with the neighboring convent of high bell tower (XVI century).

Mayan Mythology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Chac was actually four gods in one — one for each direction, north, south, east, and west — the Maya gave each part of Chac a name and a color; North was Zac Xib Chac(white), East was Chac Xib Chac(red), South was Kan Xib Chac(yellow), and West was Ek Xib Chac(fl).
Yum Kaax was the Mayan god of corn, he was as important as Chac, the rain god, because Mayan life was centered on corn; corn was the staple food of the Maya, so the success or failure of the years' crop was literally the difference between life and death.
Like Chac and Itzamna, Yum Kaax was a friendly benevolent god.
