Yuri Averbakh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yuri Lvovich Averbakh (born February 8, 1922) is a Russian chess player and author.
In 1956 Averbakh became an International Judge of Chess Compositions and in 1969 an International Arbiter.
Averbakh is the eponym of several opening variations, perhaps most notably the Averbakh System in the King's Indian Defence: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 O-O 6.Bg5 (in algebraic chess notation).

 Uncompromising Chess
Averbakh was never noted for his opening play while Belyavsky usually stood at the cutting edge of modern theory.
Averbakh, though he did attack (as every player needs to do, no matter what his personal inclination), appears to have gotten an almost ecstatic joy in trading the Queens and heading for an endgame as quickly as possible.
Averbakh concentrates on players in the pre-Botvinnik age (though Botvinnik is prominently covered, and more modern players are also presented).

Yuri Averbakh vs Cecil John Seddon Purdy (1960)
Purdy wrote an article about this particular incident; Averbakh could speak no English, and Purdy could not speak Russian, but Purdy by moving pieces on the chess board, and using body signs and facial expressions, was able to convince Averbakh of the legitimacy of his move.
But it was just so incredible, that a famous grand master and chess writer of Averbakh's standing didn't know all of the rules pertaining to castling, and this is the sort of thing you don't forget.

The chess games of Yuri Averbakh
Yuri Lvovich Averbakh was born on the 8th of February 1922 in Kaluga, Russia (formerly USSR).
: Averbakh - one of the great endgame masters, although he is not mentioned in that field so often, as he was never quite at the overall level of Smyslov, etc. Averbakh's failing to get to the very top, though, was possibly down to his having other interests apart from chess.
