Yuri Rubinsky, in cooperation with the International WWW Conference Committee, presented the SoftQuad Award for Excellence to Doug Engelbart at the Fourth International WWW Conference in Boston in December, 1995.
Upon receiving the award, Ted Nelson informed the audience that it was the first award that he had ever received in recognition of his work.
The iW3C2 withdrew its cooperation in 2000 after Richard Stallman was chosen in 1999 by a panel of previous recipients of the award.

Stallman was awarded the Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Award at last week's Eighth International World Wide Web Conference in Toronto.
The prize is awarded annually by the Yuri Rubinsky Insight Foundation "to an individual who has contributed, through a lifetime of effort, to the care and feeding of the global information infrastructure," according to the foundation's Web site.
The late Yuri Rubinsky was the co-founder of SoftQuad and a mover and shaker in getting SGML (standardized general markup language) adopted as an open standard.

One highlight of the conference was the surprise appearance of Ted Nelson.
Ted was flown out for the conference to be awarded the Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Award by Murray Maloney (co-chair of WWW8 next year).
As previous recipients of this award include Douglas Engelbart, it seems that hypertext is recognised as a key technology of the Web.
