Yu Watase - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Watase (渡瀬悠宇 Watase Yū, born March 5, 1970 in Osaka) is a Japanese shōjo manga author and artist.
Her name is romanized as Yū Watase in VIZ Media's publications of Fushigi Yūgi, Alice 19th, and Ceres, Celestial Legend, while in VIZ Media's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden her name is romanized as Yuu Watase.
Because of her frequent use of beautiful male characters in her works, she is widely regarded in circles as a "bishonen" artist.

Animazement - Friday - Yuu Watase
Fushigi Yuugi is not Yuu Watase's latest series, but he's best known effort in North America because of the anime version.
Watase had to do some studying of another kind to create that series; it look her four months to create the plot, and even then it was changed several times by the editor handling her manga.
Watase had complete control over the Fushigi Yuugi manga, but she had less control over the animated version.

However, the elements that Watase uses to tell her story are still the same ones she uses in Fushigi Yugi, Ceres, Alice...she gives us a protagonist (female, of course!) that is struggling with something other girls in the world can relate to.
All Watase's other novels captured me within the first novel and sent me begging for more because of the creative storylines, universal themes, and believible characters, but Imadoki lacks all of these along with a missing major conflict.
Along with the beautiful art of Yuu Watase we are led into a fantastic world of rich kids where money and family background means everything.

Sequential Tart: Atsukamashii Onna - Writer Profile: Yuu Watase (vol V/iss 2/February 2002)
Watase's art style in this series hadn't quite developed past her influences, but it's still a charming and amusing story using Watase's favorite theme of magic and what can go wrong if it's used irresponsibly.
By the time she did her third short story, Magical Nan, Yuu Watase had broken away from her early artistic influences, and the distinctive Watase style emerged.
In 1992 Yuu Watase began writing Fushigi Yuugi (Mysterious Play), the 18 tankobon volume series that would win her many fans around the world.

Watase's style has matured since early ANC, and it's interesting to see the evolution of her art, particularly in regards to how the characters gradually become more Japanese in appearance.

An interesting tidbit: Yuu is a name generally given to boys.
Early in her career, people often mistook Watase for a male artist because of her style of work & because of the name.
A Japanese acquaintence once remarked that Watase Yuu's speech patterns sounded like a boy's, and Watase herself has expressed an interest in working on a shounen (boy's) manga...

From Yû Watase, one of Japan's most beloved shôjo artists, IMA DOKI packs comedic charm and heartfelt antics into an adorable bouquet of whimsical fantasy.
My opinion is that this is by far Watase's best work, next to Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden (which has, in fact, been licensed in the US by VIZ and will be coming out this June!).
Watase had once said that "character relationships" is what she tries hardest to be develop in a story, I think Imadoki is a success in this aspect.
