The archipelago of Novaya Zemlya (Russian: Но́вая Земля́, "New Land"; formerly known as Nova Zembla) consists of two major islands in the Arctic Ocean in the north of Russia, separated by the narrow Matochkin Strait, and a number of smaller ones.
Novaya Zemlya separates the Barents Sea from the Kara Sea.
The area is very mountainous, as geologically Novaya Zemlya is the continuation of the Ural Mountains.

Matochkin Shar (or Matochkin Strait; Маточкин Шар in Russian), a strait between Severny (northern) and Yuzhny (southern) islands of Novaya Zemlya.
The Kara Sea (Russian: Ка́рское мо́ре) is part of the Arctic Ocean (in the area sometimes called the Arctic Mediterranean Sea) off northern Siberia, bound by the Kara Strait (West, connecting to the Barents Sea) and the Severnaya Zemlya Islands and the Northern Land Archipelago (East, and the Laptev Sea).
