In the News (Sat 28 Nov 09)

ZAngband - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name "ZAngband" stands for Zelazny Angband, because ZAngband was mainly based on Roger Zelazny's "Amber" books, rather than the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
ZAngband was originally authored by Topi Ylinen, was then maintained for a time by Robert Rühlmann, and is currently maintained by a development team led by Steven Fuerst, though there has been no development for nearly two years now.
While it was active, ZAngband continually added new features; some Angband players say that the last "fun" version was either 2.2.8 or 2.4.0, depending on their dislike of the OAngband combat system that was introduced in 2.4.0.

Zangband introduces about 20 new character races and some of the old ones are changed as well, new character classes such as the monk, chaos warrior, high mage, mindcrafter and warrior-mage.
Zangband features random artifacts, pets (charmed monsters which are friendly towards you and attack your enemies).
Zangband also has a wilderness area surrounding the town and new terrain features such as lava and water (and water monsters).

Angband proved popular, and eventually the variant known as Zangband — short for “Zelazny Angband” — came into being, improving on the original in ways deeper than the simple addition of characters from Roger Zelazny’s Amber series of books (For those unfamiliar: Political multiverse fiction about a warring family of aristocratic utter bastards).
It was rediscovered in my corner of the net early in 2004, lead to a rapidly multiplying craze, my staying up until six in the morning on a few occasions and this article in a desperate attempt to explain it all to an uncaring world.
And once Zangband was out there, people were taking its code and making variants of that.

 Zelazny Angband - ZAngband
Zangband 2.2.0 could easily claim to be the most different version of Zangband so far.
Besides the quests and wilderness, Zangband 2.2.0 also adds several new monsters (nearly 300, although some of these are from Vanilla), a couple of new weapons and pieces of armour and no less than 52 new mutations, translating to a total of 98 possible mutations.
ZAngband adds many new vaults and traps and also generates smaller levels and big open arena levels from time to time.

 Documentation/Version information - ToME Wiki
When Zangband came to it 2.2.0 version I (DarkGod) was an Angband winner and I had been a C programmer for a long time, so I decided to take the sources and to try to code my own variant.
Although I didn't like Zangband because of the Zelazny universe, which I found to be not very Tolkienish, I chose it because of all the good things it had (especially the race powers that I wasn't able to code at the time).
ZAngband 2.1.0c was Topi's last version, he has got a job and and doesn't have enough time anymore to continue work on ZAngband.

You also have a chance to get mutations, either by serving a patron who wumps you with one (getting the message "you have a hallucinatory insanity" when you gain a level is not fun), or by paying to be exposed to chaos and take your chances with a mutation.
There are all kinds of neat things in Zangband, from magical statues to different kinds of armor and equipment.
There is a definite time constraint on how long you can just mess around before you need to get moving on the main goal of the game, because after a certain point you start to mutate (due to the increased chaos in the world) and too many mutations means death.

Nethack is perhaps more elegant in certain respects but Zangband's gameplay is good enough, as well as unique enough, to warrant an interested gamer's time.
I prefer older versions of Zangband myself, and early versions of Oangband, but there is something for everyone, from the brutally hard & balanced early Oangband versions to the munchkin heaven of Pernband.
