ZIF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ZIF is an acronym for zero insertion force.
Large ZIF sockets are mainly used for PC processors (from about the mid 1990s forward) as these are likely to be upgraded or replaced several times during the lifetime of the socket.
ZIF wire-to-board connectors are used for attaching wires to printed circuit boards inside electronic equipment.

ZIF II   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
ZIF II is a self-contained assembly which simplifies many package design problems by simultaneously providing superior thermal conductivity and circuit board retention under extreme environmental conditions consistent with strict military performance standards.
ZIF II is an extension of the principles and technology which went into the design and development of ZIF circuit board retainers which provide an efficient link between circuit board and cold wall.
ZIF II functions in a similar fashion by conducting heat away from the circuit board to an appropriate coldwall.

 ZIF
A normal integrated circuit socket requires the IC to be pushed into sprung contacts which then grip by friction.
ZIF sockets are used for expensive ICs such as microprocessors, which are likely to be upgraded or replaced several times during the lifetime of the socket.
ZIF sockets are much more expensive than standard IC sockets, so they are only used where the latter are unsuitable.

The Berlin-based Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF) established on 25 April 2002 was publicly launched on 24 June by Dr Ludger Volmer, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, in the presence of a large number of representatives of the German Bundestag, the Federal Government, the media, the academic community and non-governmental organizations.
As from 1 July 2002 the ZIF will be responsible for organizing and developing the courses for such personnel run by the Foreign Office since summer 1999.
The ZIF already belongs to a core group of EU member state training institutions currently developing a European training programme for such personnel on behalf of the Commission.

 Definition of ZIF
Stands for "Zero Insertion Force." ZIF is a type of CPU socket on a computer motherboard that allows for the simple replacement or upgrade of the processor.
Processors that use a ZIF socket can easily be removed by pulling a small release lever next to the processor and lifting it out.
The replacement processor is then placed in the socket and secured by pushing the lever in the opposite direction -- hence the phrase, "zero insertion force." I suppose there is some force required to push the lever, but it is significantly less than non-ZIF sockets, which require special tools to force the processor out.

 ZIF Socket 28 Pin - 28PZIF
ZIF sockets are commonly used on PIC programming devices, for IC testing, or to simplify circuit development anywhere that frequent changing of a DIP (Dual In-line Package) integrated circuit (IC) chip is required.
ZIF socket operation: Move the small spring loaded lever in one direction (up) and the electrical contacts at the top of the ZIF socket open up to allow "drop in" insertion of a DIP IC chip.
ZIF socket construction: The bottom of the ZIF socket has solid conductive pins (in this case 28 of them) that fit in a standard 28pin, 600mil (width) IC footprint.

ZIF socket - a Whatis.com definition - see also: ZIF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket is the physical way that Intel's 486 and Pentium microprocessors up to Pentium II connect on the computer motherboard to the data bus.
As its name implies, the ZIF socket is designed for ease of manufacture and so that the average computer owner will be able to upgrade the microprocessor.
The ZIF interface evolved through eight variations, each with a differing number of pins and pin layout arrangements.

 ZIF - Zero Insertion Force
The ZIF socket has a small lever on the side of it.
When you lift the lever, the CPU will just drop in, and as the lever is closed, even pressure is applied to the pins of the processor.
Unlike other types of chip sockets that force you to push a chip into place, ZIF socket lets you drop the chip into the socket and then close a lever to cinch the chip securely in place.
