  Encyclopedia: ZPL programming language
ZPL (short for Z-level Programming Language) is an array programming language designed to replace C and C++ programming languages in engineering and scientific applications.
This is the reason why ZPL achieves such good performance: having no parallel directives or other forms of explicit parallelism, ZPL exploits the fact that when aggregate computations are described in terms of arrays, many scalar operations must be (implicitly) performed to implement the array operations.
ZPL is translated into a conventional abstract syntax tree representation on which program analysis and program optimizations are performed.

ZPL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In complexity theory, ZPL (Zero-error Probabilistic Logarithmic space) is the set of problems solvable by a probabilistic Turing machine which always yields the correct answer and uses logarithmic space on average.
NL ; thus, if a problem can be solved in logarithmic space with nondeterminism or with one-sided error, it can be solved with no error and logarithmic space on average.
See the articles on RL and NL for more information about ZPL.

ZPL provides a high level programming medium for supercomputers with efficiency comparable to handcoded message passing, and enables new users with scientific computing experience to learn the basics in just a few hours.
ZPL is implicitly parallel in that the compiler and not the programmer makes the explicit parallelization decisions, i.e.
Versions of ZPL are available for most parallel machines as well as for most UNIX platforms include Linux Intel.

Unlike other parallel languages, ZPL is founded on a machine model (the CTA) that accurately abstracts contemporary MIMD parallel computers.
ZPL s data distribution invariant and syntactically evident communication are also crucial.

SAL- Parallel Computing - Programming Languages & Systems - ZPL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
ZPL is a new array programming language designed from first principles for fast execution on both sequential and parallel computers.
Because ZPL benefits from recent research in parallel compilation, it provides a convenient high level programming medium for supercomputers with efficiency comparable to handcoded message passing.
Those who have used MATLAB or Fortran 90 may already be acquainted with the array programming style.

Caps: ZPL for the Mercury-RACE and RACE++   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Using ZPL, a programmer would be able to write a high performance embedded application in very short development time and with the additional benefit of 100% portability across a wide spectrum of parallel and sequential platforms.
As ZPL programs are automatically parallel, good parallel performance is achieved with minimal programming effort.
Our first ZPL compiling system worked under the MC/OS 4.X operating system (September 2001) and it is currently installed on our local RACE machine, force1.

 Re: Linux in the field
This software tends to be quite expensive and (when I last looked) runs on Windows only, so Kbarcode support of ZPL and IPL is good news for "Linux in the field" (our subject).
Having the label software on the production PC is a convenience when you are testing a new label because it allows you to make minor changes to it on the spot.
According to the webpage, ZPL was added 21 Oct 2003 and IPL was added 31 Oct 2003, so there's probably not that much difference between them.

The ZPL Module   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The ZPL compiler does not currently support separate compilation, so all ZPL code must reside in a single file (files may be included using the C pre-processor-see Section 9.1), but the compiler sees a single source file).
The ZPL source file has the following syntax.
The program's name, Identifier, must be a legal ZPL identifier (see Section 2.4.1).
