Linux on zSeries Mainframe May Help Grid Builders in Certain Cases
This announcement by IBM and its partners highlights some of the zSeries mainframe's advantages where distributed computing applications need high levels of availability and dynamic configurability.
The products from Data Synapse and Platform Computing enable enterprises to include a zSeries Linux system in a distributed computing environment where jobs can be scheduled on the mainframe as well as on other platforms, mainly Unix-, Linux- and Windows-based.
Gartner does not foresee many enterprises purchasing new zSeries mainframes to serve as the basis for a grid computing, nor do we see many mainframe environments with significant idle cycles that might support grid applications.

Linux for zSeries is the same as Linux for other platforms, the modifications in the kernel relate only to the customisation to the zSeries hardware (system environment, CPU architecture and hardware-dependent drivers).
As the zSeries Linux is a porting, it uses the ASCII character set (unlike the USS HFS file system that runs in the EBCDIC mode).
The LPAR mode of the zSeries hardware enables several independent operating system installations to be operated on one zSeries machine.

IDS on Linux for zSeries is a great marriage of technologies each working to provide the robustness, scalability and reliability that customers demand.
IDS 9.40 is the first IBM database engine to fully exploit the large memory, 64-bit capabilities of the Linux kernel on zSeries, and provides an excellent upgrade path for our Linux customers and customers on prior software platforms who need a high-performance, Internet-scalable data management system.
Fully implemented 64-bit architectures, such as zSeries, remove the 31-bit limitations from files, files systems, and applications and enables the use of detail-data regardless of its volume.

The real cost of zSeries consolidation - TechUpdate - ZDNet   (Site not responding. Last check: )
This opens up an opportunity for IBM, the dominant mainframe supplier, to exploit the capability of its zSeries machines to run Linux as a native operating system, as well as to run partitions in which multiple virtual Linux servers can be mixed with existing mainframe applications on the same machine.
IBM's argument for consolidating around the zSeries is straightforward: Most enterprises already have at least one zSeries machine, and though undoubtedly more expensive as an initial purchase, they provide far better results in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO) over a lengthy period.
Estimating the total cost of consolidating on the zSeries, therefore, is a matter of some importance and demands that IT managers collect some important evidence.

IBM to push cheaper ‘Linux-only’ zSeries, iSeries | The Register
According to Peter McCaffrey, director of zSeries product marketing at IBM, the new machines are based on feedback and market success that IBM has had last year in promoting the mainframe as a platform on which enterprise customers can consolidate their Unix, Linux, and Windows workloads.
Both the zSeries and iSeries Linux servers can be configured with commercial Linux distributions from SuSE and Turbolinux; Red Hat is expected to have support for these two boxes, and indeed the entire eServer line, in short order, perhaps by the time these two Linux-only servers ship in sometime in March.
Customers with existing zSeries and iSeries servers supporting their core ERP applications will be inclined to listen to IBM's sales pitch and maybe even run some numbers to see if they could save some money by consolidating Unix, Linux, or Windows applications onto Linux partitions on these zSeries or iSeries servers.

Although the zSeries platform stands to benefit from the scalability enhancements in the Linux 2.6 release, we need to examine the impact of these changes on other aspects of system performance.
Although zSeries users can download the patches from the IBM Web site and build their own version of the kernel, they usually use major enterprise Linux distributions (such as those supplied by Red Hat, Inc.) that are based on these versions.
Being close to the Linux development process is particularly important for Linux on the zSeries platform because this platform differs in many ways from PCs (personal computers), on which historically Linux development was focused.
