  Sinclair ZX Spectrum software
In my youth I was a great fan of the Sinclair Spectrum, which was a marvellous little machine, and largely responsible for the home computer revolution in the UK at least.
I got a Spectrum emulator for my Risc PC and found a few snapshots of games on the Internet, and my interest was rekindled.
Spectrum Electronics was on Marsh Road in Luton.

Printable Representation, the Unicode characters reserved for representing control characters when it is necessary to print or display them rather than have them perform their intended function.
Various DEC operating systems used both characters to mark the end of a line, perhaps for compatibility with teletypes, and this de facto standard was copied in the CP/M operating system and then in MS-DOS and eventually Microsoft Windows.
Unicode and the ISO/IEC 10646 Universal Character Set (UCS) have a much wider array of characters, and their various encoding forms have begun to supplant ISO/IEC 8859 and ASCII rapidly in many environments.

ZX Spectrum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ZX Spectrum was a home computer released in the United Kingdom in 1982 by Sinclair Research Ltd. Originally dubbed the ZX82, the machine was later renamed the Spectrum by Sinclair to highlight the machine's colour display, compared to the fl-and-white of its predecessors, the ZX80 and ZX81.
The Spectrum was the first mainstream audience home computer in the UK, similar in significance to the Commodore 64 in the USA; the C64 was the main rival to the Spectrum in the UK market during the 1980s.
The Spectrum had an interesting method of handling colour; the colour attributes were held in a 32×24 grid, separate from the text or graphical data, but was still limited to only two colours in any given character cell, both of which had to be either bright or non-bright.

Your ZX Spectrum comes with a mains adaptor, all the necessary leads to connect to most cassette recorders and TVs (colour or fl and white), and two manuals.
The ZX Printer connects to the rear of your ZX Spectrum and a roll of paper (65 ft long x 4 in wide) is supplied, along with full instructions.
The ZX Spectrum uses an enhanced version of Sinclair BASIC, fast becoming a world standard, and unlikely to be superseded.

Retailing for £125 for the 16KB and £175 for the 48KB model, the Spectrum was the first mainstream audience home computer in the UK, similar in significance to the Commodore 64 in the USA (the C64 also being the main rival to the Spectrum in the UK market).

The electromagnetic spectrum, shown in the table, extends from electric power at the long-wavelength end to gamma radiation at the short-wavelength end, covering wavelengths from thousands of kilometres down to fractions of the size of an atom.
In a modern Islamic country, for instance, a political spectrum might be divided along the issue of the clergy's role in government.
The text mode display was 32 columns × 24 rows of characters from the Spectrum Character Set, with a choice of 8 colours in either normal or bright mode, which gave 15 shades (fl was the same in both modes).

These flip flops are simultaneously set or reset by the EI and DI instructions.
The Spectrum loading software is not sensitive to the polarity of this bit (which it definitely should not be, not only because of this model difference, but also because you cannot be sure the tape recorder doesn't change the polarity of the signal recorded!).
The normal Spectrum contains no hardware to place a byte on the bus, and the bus will therefore always read FF (because the ULA also doesn't read the screen if it generates an interrupt), so the resulting index address is 256*I+255.

The Lil Old ZX Spectrum 48k Service Manual - Section 1
The architecture of the Spectrum shown above is typical of many microcomputer systems in that it comprises a single microprocessor board (in this instance a Z80A or u780 CPU), a read only memory (ROM), an expandable RAM memory and an input/output section handling the keyboard, tape and TV display functions.
In the standard 16k Spectrum there are 32k bytes of addressable memory equally divided between ROM and RAM.
These links not only cater for the different manufacturer (Issue 3 Spectrums only) but also allow, in both instances, one of the two IC versions to be selected depending on which half of the RAM (top, bottom, left or right) is functional.

» Character Advent Calendar » Game Addicts
One of the most fondly remembered early ZX spectrum games was Jetpac, the star of which was a little space man called Lunar Jet Man.
Funnily enough, he was equipped with a jet pack to enable him to fly around, and also a laser which shot out in front of him in a simple yet astonishingly beautiful (given the hardware limitations) burst of coloured lines.
The game was a flick screen platformer for the Spectrum and Commodore 64 in the style of Jet Set Willy, and is unusual for the time in that it made quite a stir in UK news paper and television.

However, Matthew Smith himself said that the copyright-owners of "If I Were a Rich Man" demanded payment for the use of their tune, so he replaced it with "In the Hall of the Mountain King", the copyright of which has expired.
