  Planet Sinclair: Computers: ZX81
The ZX81 owed its success not to its capabilities but to that most elusive quality, being the right product in the right place at the right time.
The ZX81 could not have succeeded in the way that it did without the fortuitous involvement of the British newspaper chain W.H. Smith.
From the outset it was clear that Timex was the ideal partner for Sinclair to use in its attempt to crack the crucial United States market.

 Sinclair ZX81 : ZX81
A printer was marketed to accompany the ZX81: This was a thermal printer in which a wire point sparked the dot pattern into 4-inch-wide silvery-grey thermal paper, accompanied by a distinct odor of ozone.
The ZX81 improved on this, so that the ZX81 could run in fast mode like the ZX80, blanking while programs ran, or the slow mode (approximately 1/4 as fast) in which the video refresh was maintained while programs ran in whatever spare machine cycles remained (hence the slow-down in program speed).
The ZX81 sold in large numbers, until it was replaced by its greatly upgraded successor, the ZX Spectrum.

Sinclair ZX81 - Art History Online Reference and Guide
The ZX81 could run in FAST mode like the ZX80, blanking while programs ran, or in SLOW mode (approximately 1/4 as fast) in which the video was maintained since programs ran only while the TV's electron gun moved from the bottom to the screen back to the top.
The ZX81 used its own non-standard character set in which 0-63 were printable characters and 128-191 were the same characters in reverse video.
The ZX81 had the bitmaps of the character set at the end of its 8K BASIC ROM; the ROM was wired to the opposite side of address bus series resistors so that certain address bits could be overridden under ULA control.

ZX Interface 2 - New ROM Cartridges
High resolution ZX81 games utilise a separate display file from the normal one and this must also be copied by the interrupt routine when it is being shown.
When loading ZX81 programs, the volume control typically needs to be lower than it would for Spectrum tapes and should cause the display to show white and fl bars of equal height.
As with the 'ZX81' ROM cartridge, when loading or saving via a serial connection a single byte is initially transmitted to indicate the type of transfer required.

The development work for this ZX81 computer has involved designing and building 5 generations of prototype PCBs of which some combinations didn't work at all and some didn't work to my satisfaction.
Apparently some of these impedance sensitive circuits are influenced by the extra circuitry in the Euro-ZX81 used to implement the ZX81 SLOW mode feature, in effect to expand the ZX80's display capabilities to match those of the ZX81.
The final ZX81 prototype which I call the Euro-ZX81 has a horizontal flatcable connector(on the CPU board) which functions as an expansion connector that allows for it to be connected in a larger system which can involve numerous PCBs with different I/O functions.
