Zachariah T. Chandler (December 10, 1813–November 1, 1879) was Mayor of Detroit (1851–52), a four-term U.S. Senator from the state of Michigan (1857–75, 1879), and Secretary of the Interior under U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1875–77).
Chandler was born in Bedford, New Hampshire, the nephew of John Chandler and Thomas Chandler, the grandfather of Frederick Hale, and the great-great-granduncle of Rodney Dennis Chandler.
Chandler was reelected in 1863 and again in 1869, serving from March 4, 1857, to March 3, 1875 in the 35th through the 43rd U.S. Congresses.

Zachariah Chandler was born on Dec. 10, 1813, on a farm in Bedford Township, N.H. After attending district schools, he joined the tide of westward migration from New England and settled in the frontier city of Detroit in 1833.
Chandler was also chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce; he promoted the passage of measures creating a national banking system, higher tariffs, and other legislation to finance the war and aid Northern industrial growth.
Chandler reached the height of his power in the Grant administration; he was influential in formulating policy and used Federal patronage to build a personal political machine in Michigan.

Senator Zachariah Chandler was NOT a descendant of 1610 Virginia immigrant John Chandler.
I have checked this in the past and I'm pretty sure he was a descendant of George and Jane who landed (George actually died at sea) in what is now New Castle County, DE in late 1686.
