Born in Hamilton, Missouri, Wheat made his major league debut in 1909 with the Brooklyn Superbas (later renamed the Dodgers and Robins) and played his first full season in 1910.
Wheat moved to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1927 and retired after the season.
Wheat was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1959.

Throughout the 1920s, Wheat was consistently among the league leaders in batting average, usually trailing Rogers Hornsby.
