The war with the Vampires was first mentioned in State of Decay; however, their background in Zagreus contradicts The Pit and Interference, which claim that the Vampires and their kin, the Yssgaroth, were forces of ultimate evil unleashed into the Universe by the Time Lords’ own early experiments.

The legend of Zagreus is one of the strangest stories in Greek mythology.
Zagreus was born after Zeus disguised himself as a serpent and ravished Persephone.
Zagreus changed into a bull, but failed to escape the Titans, who cut him to pieces and devoured him, half raw and half cooked.

It’s an uncomfortable position for her to be in, and the Doctor realises this, but the Zagreus inside him is angry, and although it’s hard to tell who is who within him it seems to me that the Doctor has become very bitter about his people and his home.
Overall however, 'Zagreus' is so riddled with "fanwank" that it creaks beneath the weight of contrived references to the past and by the time of the inevitable team-up between recreated past Doctors as Winky, Tepesh and Townsend realize how they know things they shouldn't it's all become interminable.
When 'Zagreus' finally and fortunately reaches its end, the self-indulgent mining of the past does at least give way to the possibility of an exciting new era, as the Doctor and the writers are given the opportunity to explore a whole new universe.

Zagreus is the epic 40th anniversary tale, fashioned to bring back a myriad of actors and actresses who have helped make the show what it is today.
Yes, at almost four hours, Zagreus is a bit long, and yes, it takes a couple listens to absorb the plot, but there is no denying that there is a sense of celebration at the heart of the tale.
Zagreus is enjoyable, but only if you don't stop to wonder about the clutter.

As Zagreus, the Doctor struck her and then threatened her with more violence which to Charley was something inconceivable given her knowledge of the Doctor’s character.
Zagreus was written as an epic and ambitious story to mark two distinctive occasions, but it ultimately ends up as a victim of its own intentions by trying too hard to be special.

ZAGREUS : Greek god of the Orphic Mysteries, first Dionysus ; mythology : ZAGREOS
ZAGREUS was a god of the Orphic Mysteries known as the "first-born Dionysos." He was the son of the goddess Persephone, who was seduced by her own father Zeus in the form of a serpent.
The genitals of Zagreus were recovered by the Kabeiroi gods, in another tale, and deposited on the island of Samothrake, where mysteries were celebrated.

Zagreus (later Bacchus or Iacchos) is the divine Son, the third of the Orphic Trinity, the other two being Zeus the Demiurge or divine All-father, and Demeter-Kore, the earth goddess in her twofold aspect as the divine Mother and the mortal maid.
Hera, however, poisoned the mind of Semele with suspicion when the new-forming body of Zagreus within her reached the seventh month of gestation, and Semele impelled Zeus to reveal himself to her in his true form, whereupon the mortal body of Semele was destroyed by the divine fire.
Zagreus as Dionysos is known as the god of many names, most of which refer to his twofold character as the suffering mortal Zagreus, and the immortal or reborn god-man. Many titles also refer to him as the mystic savior.

 Zagreus Abstract
Although the myth of Zagreus provides a seductively simple and neat explanation of the cryptic gold tablets, it is unfortunately a modern creation that could not have been known to the 'Orphics' of Timpone Piccolo.
The pieces of the Zagreus myth reveal, not a single canonical story providing crucial dogma for the 'Orphic Church', but rather a multitude of tales told about the death of Dionysos and the punishment of the Titans, each with its own meaning woven out of the differing combinations of the traditional motifs.
I next show that, viewed without the framework of the Zagreus myth, the pieces of evidence provide testimony to a variety of tellings of the dismemberment myth, which was not the exclusive property of the 'Orphics' but rather a well-known element in the Greek mythic tradition.

The Thracian Dionysus-Zagreus is a direct Orphic borrowing in the dramatic Dionysian reincarnation of the doctrinal chthonic son of the Great Mother Goddess while the Greek authors perceive Sabazios as a character of the ritual presentation, as an acting foreign god.
The versions of the myth of Zagreus in the Ancient Greek literature put Zagreus next to Persephone (Semele) while Sabazios is always next to Cybele (the Great Mother) or will be mentioned standing by her hypostases such the Asia Minor goddesses Angdistis or Ma.
The author distinguishes Zagreus and Sabazios as two different gods, the first one born as a “corned snake” and the other one transformed into a snake, which was the symbol of his intemperance.
