Zahedan is the main economic center of the region and home to many small- and medium-scale industries.
Highways link Zahedan to Tehran and Mashhad in the north, the port of Bandar Chabahar on the Arabian Sea in the south, and the Pakistani city of Quetta in the east.
A rail line also runs from Zahedan to Quetta, and a rail line from Zahedan to Kerman in central Iran was being constructed in the mid-1990s.

At least 90 people were killed late on Thursday night in a massive explosion near Iran's border with Afghanistan after a petrol tanker crashed into the Nosrat Abad checkpoint, 60 miles west of Zahedan, reports independent.co.uk.

TERHAN Dec. 7 (Mehr News Agency) –- A sum of 13b rials has been allocated to complete Zahedan Grand Museum, said a museum expert of the Cultural Heritage Organization.
Morteza Shafahi added that the project was postponed years ago due to lack of budget, but when the project is complete the museum will turn into a grand museum of the country besides those in Tehran, Kermanshah, and Khorasan.
There are almost 250 museums in the country at present, said Shafahi.
