To enable Zaide to reach a wider public, the Classical Opera Company is creating a completed version of the opera, commissioning the distinguished young poet Michael Symmons Roberts to write a new text and using other Mozart works from the same period as Zaide to complete the work musically.
The libretto on which Zaide was based was titled 'The Seraglio, or The Unexpected Reunion of Father, Daughter and Son in Slavery' written in 1778 by a certain Franz Josef Sebastiani, and an earlier source may well have been Voltaire's Zaire, although no 18th century opera, however bleak, would have shared Voltaire's tragic ending.
What survives of Zaide is the skeleton of the first three-quarters of the story; although we know what the surviving 15 numbers are about, the dialogue and the way these numbers are set up (and of course the whole ending) are an open and unwritten book.

But what has given Zaide more life than works such as L'Oca del Cairo and Lo Sposo Deluso is partly the sheer quantity of the surviving music, and the fact it includes one of Mozart's most sublime arias, Ruhe Sanft, whose quality of soaring expressiveness is unlike anything else in his output.
There are been numerous attempts to make Zaide into a dramatic and musical whole; other pieces of Mozart have been coralled into the score, more detailed scenarios (including one by Italo Calvino) imposed upon the rudimentary dramatic structure.
The soprano in the title role, Veronica Cangami, was a late replacement - her intonation never quite got on terms with the baroque pitch being used by the orchestra, which had previously shown its muscle in Mozart's Symphony No 34.
