		Zainul's first eighteen years, though spent in rural and mofussil Bengal, are noteworthy because they exposed his sensibility to the varied beauty of the seasons and made him aware of his vocation.
		Zainul participated in a UNESCO-sponsored modern art exhibition in Paris, in November 1946; in the Asian exhibition organized in March 1947 by the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (he was awarded Second Prize for watercolors); and in an exhibition of contemporary Indian art held at Burlington House, London, in 1947.
		Zainul took voluntary early retirement from the Dhaka Art College in 1967 and in a booklet published by his students to mark the occasion he was dubbed “Shilpacharya,” the appellation by which he has since come to be known.
