Tiny Mix Tapes Reviews: The Flaming Lips Music Review
Likewise, they’ve refigured the concept of "stereo surround- sound" with their LP Zaireeka (1997), which was a 4-disc set whose individual discs were intended to be played at the same time in the same room.
Zaireeka was a massive breakthrough for them, but Soft Bulletin is the true gem in their catalog.
Zaireeka is the first multiple sound source record and the first that "can cause a person to become disoriented, confused or nauseated." It's a quadruple disc album that has the same songs on each disc, but the unique part is that each CD contains different parts of a song.

Zaireeka begins with a prompt on each CD that informs the listener of the track number and CD number that is heard as a list, starting with the first disc and ending with the fourth.
Zaireeka is a remarkable album not only because it’s experimental and original conceptually, but because it’s also filled with beautiful arrangements and songs that lend themselves well to that concept.
Zaireeka means progress in the face of decay, which is exactly what it is. The interlacing melodies are pretty, and the songs themselves are entertaining in more than just the context of the record’s concept.

Zaireeka was finished two days previously, and we listened to it (from home-lasered cds) on the three stereos at Hellfire's disposal.
And maybe, in years to come, we'll all be looking back to that release date of the 28th of October 1997.

Zaireeka was already special to me because I'd recently been to a listening party at the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco shortly after the date of release and heard the album "properly" on four perfectly synched systems.
Zaireeka is stored on CD, of course, so you can re-cue the tracks is the synchronization becomes precarious.
Zaireeka is a great excuse to bring people together to listen to music communally.

Occasionally discordant aside; when Zaireeka is working its own particular magic in your world; when the main theme is bopping from stereo to stereo and the supplementary elements are weaving this kaleidoscopic tapestry of sound.
Before having heard Zaireeka, I was enamored with the concept of an album that has to be played on four stereos to be heard properly.
Having now heard Zaireeka, I know that this is something far more than a clever concept, this is as close to art (art in the sense of being unreasonably beautiful; stimulating, inspiring, worthy of awe and leaving me dying to hear it again) as rock and roll has ever come.

In the light of the fantastic 1999 album, 'The Soft Bulletin', it is not really for anyone to deny their genius.
When observing the inventive splenour of the 1997 (apparently, although I'm sure it was early 1998) album, 'Zaireeka', it can be confirmed that this is lunatic genius, with some very unhinged minds at the controls.
The effect of the melodies and frequencies flying about your ears and brain can be somewhat disorientating, but thats half the fun; I wouldn have been dissapointed if I didn't begin to feel dizzy like the booklet...

Zaireeka - The Flaming Lips - Similar Albums
A combination of the words "Zaire" and "Eureka," Zaireeka is a term coined by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne symbolizing the fusion of anarchy and genius.
Pushing the concept of interactive listening into new realms of possibility, the work extends Coyne's infamous "parking lot experiments" into not merely one album, but four separate discs that can be played separately or in groups of two, three, and four with multiple stereos.
Logistical nightmares aside, Zaireeka is a dense, difficult work, recommended only for the hardiest Flaming Lips fetishists; however, they're in for the musical experience of a lifetime.

Zaireeka is a mind-blowing statement of how big a record can be, consisting of eight songs and four CDs which must be played simultaneously.
A similar tour is being booked as we speak.) Zaireeka is a proper Lips album, complete with the cozy, fireside melodies and spacy guitar twigs that fans have come to love.
The sheer quantity of sounds on Zaireeka is stunning: sometimes the rate at which they move back and forth is akin to bullets ricocheting around a jungle gym.

As singer/songwriter Wayne Coyne explains in liner notes that make "The Unabomber Manifesto" seem lucid and rational, the album is his attempt to meld the sound of a collapsing civilization (he posits Zaire) with the joy of musical discovery (eureka!).
Coyne suggests that "Zaireeka" can be listened to a disc at a time, but listening to it that way is jarring and amusical; long periods of silence are broken by a random cymbal crash or a country-esque croon, making it the dumbest box set in recorded history.

On their 10th album, Zaireeka, the Flaming Lips take it one step further – they make the listener finish mixing it.
When a blast of hair-raising screams rips through layers of guitars, piano and strings on "Riding to Work in the Year 2025," you're trapped in a mocking hall of mirrors that only seconds ago used to be the Brill Building.
By the time Zaireeka envelops you in all of its feedback and regal horns, all of its barking dogs and disintegrating moths, you no longer care whether the whole equals the sum of its parts.

The members of the unpredictable Oklahoma band Flaming Lips have never done anything the easy way: Over the course of nine full-length albums and countless EPs, their music has been alternately and simultaneously freaked-out, acerbic, catchy, abrasive, self-indulgent and beautiful.
It's challenging in the most literal sense of the word: In order to listen to it the way it was meant to be heard, you have to play its four (!) discs simultaneously on separate CD players—with friends there to help you get the synchronization just right.
There are no pop singles scattered throughout Zaireeka's 45 minutes, but there are noises and voices coming out of every corner of the room.

Their loopy, catchy and incredibly textured songs are their stock and trade, but The Lips have also been known to mix it up with longer, totally wacked-out concept pieces that defy any and all categorization.
Promoting their unwieldy CD box set Zaireeka (4 separate CDs intended to be played simultaneously on four separate CD players), The Lips were in the house not to play their instruments, but rather to "press play" on the 40 boom boxes they'd jammed up on the stage.
After a series of slightly irksome sound checks to calibrate all of the tape decks, there was an anxious countdown and then the volunteers were told to start their boom boxes in unison.

How to listen to “Zaireeka” on your computer at work
For the uninitiated, all four CD's on Zaireeka are designed to be played simultaneously on four separate CD players.
Now before I get on with the point of this piece, I have to say that the aural experience of hearing these four CD's at the same time spread throughout a large space is unlike anything I've ever experienced.
Another by-product of doing this at work is that the act of syncing four separate media players on your computer at once will give you an unintended look of intense concentration on your face, which may help others mistakenly believe that you are an industrious worker.
