Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is a graphical adventure game, originally released in 1988, published by LucasArts (known at the time as LucasFilm Games).
The plot follows Zak, a writer for trash newspaper the National Inquisitor, in his attempt to destroy a machine created by nefarious aliens that is slowly reducing the intelligence of everybody on Earth.
Originally released on the Commodore 64, it was later ported to the Amiga, Atari ST, and PC with EGA graphics.

Zak is a young and promising reporter for the "National Inquisitor", a publication whose headlines are almost as big as the waist-line of the editor.
First of all, his love life is about as lively as Elvis, and secondly, Zak wants to become a Pulitzer-winning novelist, something which is difficult when working for a tabloid as sleazy as all the members of The National Used-Car Salesman Association put together.
The quality of the graphics detoriate a little bit when you get into the game, but hey, there are a lot of environments in this game that must be created, and a high number of games would have been gaining a lot of goodwill if their graphics had been as good as these.

There are evil alien plans to overthrow the Earth, and then there are machinations of the Caponians.
Only the heroic efforts of tabloid reporter Zak McCracken kept the aliens’ plan from taking effect and enslaving us all, as well as, coincidentally, revealing the secrets behind the Egyptian pyramids, the "face" on Mars and just what happened to Elvis.
Then again, if the current state of human mental capacity is any indication, maybe the Mindbenders are winning, after all...

Mars in fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Martian (one of several species encountered) is depicted as a sympathetic, intelligent being who thinks as well as or better than a human, but in a convincingly alien manner (a rare feat at any time, but especially striking for pulp science fiction of that era).
But when a Viking space probe sends back the picture of an alien creature swinging a stick, a joint US/USSR mission is sent in a hurry to explore the planet, and things develop fast from there.
Mars is shown as being previously inhabited by an ancient race of aliens who created a machine for producing a breathable atmosphere on the planet.

Review: Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders | Gameology
It's interesting to compare the two games and think about the direction Lucas Arts was taking its GAGs back in the late 80s.
All of these intergame references really help to produce a sort of "meta game" across the Lucas Arts library; even though Zak and MM are certainly not "sequels" or the like, there is enough continuity here to make them fit nicely together.
In short, Zak is a good game that deserves its place in any serious GAG collection.

He worked in the early days for LucasArts, creating “little known” titles Maniac Mansion, Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders, the Indiana Jones series, Loom, the Monkey Island series, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle.
Moving on to Humungous and then to Hulabee, he created many of their Putt Putt and Freddie Fish titles [In may ways, I get the impression that Moop and Dreadly is an homage to such 1960’s children’s classic cartoons as Gerald McBoing Boing and Beany and Cecil – Randy].
