Foreign firms have reached "very good results" in their exploration for oil deposits in Kurdistan (Iraq) the border town of Zakho, said Mohammed Zaibari, head of the northern oil distribution company.
Zaibari, speaking in a local television interview, did not name the foreign firms but said they were exploring for oil in Kurdistan (northern Iraq) under an agreement with the central government.
Zakho is a town in the Kurdish north bordering Turkey.

ZAKHO, Iraq (CNN) -- Up to 2,500 Kurdish refugees will request asylum in the United States after fleeing northern Iraq, fearful of reprisals because they had worked there for private U.S. aid groups.
The evacuation by bus of the Kurds to Turkey was completed on Monday, and a first group of about 300 was flown to the island of Guam, a United States territory in the western Pacific, the U.S. State Department said.
Some aid agency workers, hoping to join the exodus, went in vain to military coordination headquarters in Zakho, but its American staff was long gone.

The other Iraqi academy is in northern Iraq - specifically, in Zakho, a mainly Kurdish town near the border with Turkey.
Its new program is organized along the lines of West Point, offering education and training that results in bachelor's degrees equivalent to engineering degrees here, as well as in commissions in the new Iraqi forces.
It was the academy in Zakho that I had in mind in my comments on subtle indicators of success in Iraq.

In addition to the full text of the book of Numbers, Sabar also supplies an introduction that examines the structure and background of the Zakho neo-Aramaic version, appendices containing extracts from versions of Numbers in the neo-Aramaic dialects of the Jews and Christians of Urmia (Iranian Kurdistan) and finally a comparative and etymological glossary.
There is still no full grammatical description of the neo-Aramaic dialect of the Jews of Zakho, either of the language of the traditional oral literature or of the vernacular language spoken by survivors of the community today, which differs from the language of the oral Bible versions in some respects.

ZAKHO, Iraq — Come December, Iraqi army officer candidates who show up at the Zakho Military Academy may think they’ve been mistakenly sent to a resort.
The 200 cadets training at the academy now are in cramped quarters, eating in a chow hall built for 80 people and using a dilapidated old gymnasium.
The $8.2 million project at Zakho also includes potable and waste water treatment facilities to accommodate 5,000 people, said Joshua Adekanbi, project engineer for the academy.

They warned me specifically not to go to Mosul, and when I told them I was just going to Zakho (border city) they suggested Dohuk, as I would see a bit more there.
I wandered around Zakho for an hour with backpack on, talked to a hotel owner who gave me tea and told me the history of kudistan and helped me change money, and caught a shared taxi to Dohuk (5 dinar).
Next morning I poked around the impressive market/bazaar, where one could easily spend a few hours just looking at stuff and people, and took the shared taxi back to Zakho, and then crossed back into Turkey, on a cigarette smuggling taxi (I was unaware of this, but it's the norm).
