Xavier Fleet Yards -- Bellatrix Species   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The Zaldans are a minor Federation species, visually indistinquishable from humans save for a webbed membrane between their fingers.
The peculiarity about the Zaldan culture, which often sees them separated from serving on mostly-human starships within the fleet, is that they are infuriated by courtesy, viewing it as a form of phony social behavior designed to camouflage true feelings.
Thusly, the best way to communicate with a Zaldan is to be as direct and aggressive as is possible without descending into fist-fight.

Zaldan cultural values are quite different than most as they reject all forms of courtesy as an act of dishonesty and hiding of true feelings and emotions.
Therefore other Federation citizens have learned to address and deal with any Zaldan in what would ordinarily be considered rude manners (actually considered proper manners to the Zaldans).
Zaldans are on average greater in height and overall body weight at full adult size than most Federation humanoids.

 ST:WOC - Systems and Planets - Zald
This system is home to the bizzare society of the Zaldans, legendary for their lack of (and utter distain for) social courtesy, but the system, like the Zaldans themselves are more complex than they first appear.
Zaldans are a patient and determined people, able to stay focused on a single task for long periods.
While Zaldans often seem psychologically simple because of their "honesty", their social interaction is more complex than it sometimes seems to outsiders.

 Haakon "Kon"
This subcutaneous layer, coupled with the density of his bone structure and musculature, enables him to shrug off even subzero temperatures and both incredible pressure (such as the depths of the ocean) as well as even survive exposure to the vaccuum of space (for a short period of time).
As a race, the Zaldans are descended from aquatic mammals (not dissimilar from the Terran species known as dolphins).
This has lead to a tendency for Zaldans to be very protective of their 'tribe' and 'lands.' As with most Zaldan who venture into space, Haakon's "tribe" consists of his crewmates, while his "lands" consist of his ship and the Federation.

We've just got a Zaldan MO on the Kodiak, and the personality trait characteristic of Zaldans is a total dislike of (and sometimes violent reaction to) courtesy.
I don't know if the revision would help the Zaldans, but it would probably clear any problems the Vulcans would have.
Then it could be left up to the individual physician just how much honesty required -- humans might be tactful and sympathetic, while Zaldans and Vulcans might seem a lot colder than that.

Amazon.ca: Star Trek Aliens: Books   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The previous review of this book was pretty solid, but there are a few points that I think need to be made.
First of all, the missing races such as the Regulans/Kaitians and the Grazerites were made available in the previous volume by the same company, book 3 Starfleet Operations Manual along with the Bolians, Centaurans, Tellarites, Tiburonese and Zaldans.
I am leaning to the thought they opted to not duplicate all of the offerings in the alien book so that there would still be value to buying the Starfleet Operations Manual for expanded racial offerings; after all, the Andorians and Romulans were included in the Narrators Guide already as well.
