Topic: Zalongo

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

  David Calcutt - Zalongo
In 1803 the Turkish army of Ali Pasha overran the town of Souli in Northern Greece, and the survivors, mainly women and children, fled towards the coast.
A group of them took refuge on the heights of Zalongo, but, seeing that the Turks were pursuing them, the women took hold of their children and danced.
As the Turks advanced, the women, one by one, threw themselves and their children off the edge of the cliff, rather than face enslavement.

She was a Souliotissa, it means a woman coming from Souli, large village on the mountains in Greece which the Ottomans were never able to occupy despite their 400-year occupation of Greece because of the tough resistance of its population, men and women.
At one time, the Turkish troops were making one of their attempts to suppress the village and they managed to surround a group of Souliotisses women at a steep cliff near the village, at a place called Zalongo.
Under the lead of Moscho Tzavella, they started a Greek dance hand by hand and each time the woman at the end of the line came at the edge of the cliff, she would jump to her death.
