The California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) is a coastal sea lion of the eastern Pacific often associated with marinas and wharves.
Males grow a large crest of bone on the top of their heads as they reach sexual maturity, and it is this that gives the animal its generic name (loph is "forehead" and za- is an emphatic; Zalophus californianus means "Californian Big-head").
There are three subspecies: Zalophus californianus californianus is the nominate race, the others are the Galapagos Sea Lion (Z.

Except in summer, the California sea lion, a temperate to subtropical species, overlaps its range with that of the Steller's sea lion, a subarctic to temperate species, which ranges from the Bering Sea south to the Channel Islands.
The breeding range of Zalophus extends from the Channel Islands off southern California south along the coast of Mexico, possibly to the Tres Marias Islands.
A number of islands in the Sea of Cortez have breeding populations, but the major sites are San Miguel and San Nicolas islands in the Channel Island chain, along with several islands off the Pacific Coast of Baja California.

Observations on the reactions of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) to the presence of foraging transient killer whales (Orcinus orca) were made on three occasions.
Alert and avoidance responses by sea lions were made in the presence of killer whales of typical appearence.
It is possible that the sea lions did not recognize the atypical whale as a killer whale, suggesting that sea lions may have a perceptual "search image" for the detection of predators, based on visual cues.
