Akande resigned from the NDP after contemplating for several weeks whether to go public with her concerns about how Masters was treated.
What Akande didn't say when she resigned was that at the height of the Masters affair two years ago, she attended a meeting with Masters, Rae and former NDP party president Julie Davis.
Akande claims she is leaving politics to go back to her old job as a junior school principal here in Metro, but one government insider says she may get a plum government appointment in the next few months.

Akande remained in that position until August 31, 1994, when She resigned from the Legislature in protest against Rae's handling of the Carlton Masters controversy.

Former Ontario minister and school principal Zanana Akande, who co-chairs the Toronto District School Board Task Force on the Safe Schools Act, said almost 1,000 children - many of them Black -- under age seven have been suspended under the Act.
Akande suggested that youths who are unfairly forced out of the school under the Act, could become ideal targets for gang membership.

She recounts an incident in a GTA school where a teacher doing a lesson on slavery divided students into “slaves” and “slave owners,” asking each to write a journal about their experiences.
“The fl students were having to write a journal as though they were a slave,” Akande says.
