		The zanbatō is claimed in Rurouni Kenshin to be a historical weapon from the Sengoku Period in Japan, where it was supposedly designed to be used against cavalry, its large size being useful for killing horses and their riders in a single blow.
		The character of Sanosuke is said to have been based on Harada Sanosuke, one of the leaders of the Shinsengumi, who carried a "large spear".
		There was, however, a Chinese weapon of the Song Dynasty also written as 斬馬刀 (zhǎn mǎ dāo or zhanmadao) which could have been the inspiration for the zanbatō, although it differs somewhat in form.

		The Zanbatou itself is great, but you must keep in mind, from the bottom of the blade, the sword has a straight angle until the tip, there's no last minute corners on boths sides.
		The zanbatou was indeed an extremely heavy sword, but it could easily have been forged to be wieldable...though it would still have been depressingly slow.
		Also, from what data I have gathered the zanbatou would have a long enough handle that it would be balanced almost as well as a nodachi, making it similarly easy to use.
