ZTT Records is a record label founded in 1983 by NME journalist Paul Morley, record producer Trevor Horn, producer/engineer Gary Langan and businesswoman Jill Sinclair.
ZTT is an initialism based on the title of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's sound poem Zang Tumb Tumb.
ZTT enjoyed considerable success in the 1980s with the composer Andrew Poppy, bands such as Propaganda, The Art of Noise, and the chart-topping Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

he pushed the limits for an pop/rock record label, though, knowing andrew poppy had involvement with the industrial noises by throbbing gristle, as well as having a proper musical education, i suspect that the ztt knew exactly what they were letting themselves in for when they got the required signature on the contract.
i am not going into full detail here as to what forms andrews groove, as the superb sleeve notes (written by longtime ztt aficionado, ian peel) reveal all, thus providing a full and proper insight to his arrival at sarm east (or was it west?).
instead, i will just say that over the 3 cds there are select cuts from all of his releases on ztt, 2 albums and 2 12" singles, as well as an appearance of an unreleased album 'under the son'.

Trevor Horn Worship Hall - ZTT - The Label of Trevor Horn
ZTT stands for Zang Tuum Tumb, a term found in a poem and in "The Art of Noises", a book of the Futurist-movement in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century.
"Zang Tuum Tumb" is said to be the onomatopoetic description of the firing-sound of the big railway cannons which the Russians used in the Crimean War.
Morley said, ZTT's main aim was to reestablish the glory of pop-records as one of the fanciest and most fascinating ways of communication in the twentieth century and to make ZTT the most interesting, provocative, crazy and unpredictable record label of the eighties.

The first ZTT release, in September 1983, was entitled Into Battle with the Art of Noise and was a rather bizarre 'albumette' (an EP) that came complete with pseudo-intellectual sleeve notes written by Morley (these and the song titles were his only contribution to the group).
During their first few years ZTT achieved an unprecedented amount of success for a fledgling record company, largely because of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, although the successes of the other two artists should not be ignored (three UK top-30 singles and two UK top-30 LPs).
ZTT were pioneers not only of the 12" remix but also of another new format: the cassette single.

Furthermore there are a few specific discussion groups for some ZTT artists: Apart from the aforementioned Pleasureboard for Frankie Goes To Hollywood, there's the official 808 State Discussion Board, a mailing list for The Art Of Noise called AON-Chat, and the Mabuse egroup for Propaganda.

Tuum Tumb and Warners have agreed between them that Zang Tuum Tumb can leave the bunk bed and find their own room.
Zang Tuum Tumb ment, that they would miss sharing the bunk bed with Warners, and Warners would miss having Zang Tuum Tumb underneath them making all the noise and causing all that mischief, but ultimately Zang Tuum Tumb was looking forward to getting it's own room and Warners wished them well in this new room.

Trevor Horn pulled together the semi-anonymous studio band and issued its records as an art statement on his Zang Tuum Tumb label.

He was really nice and said something like “if I’d been running ZTT you’d be on you’re 16th album by now.” It could have been a kind of radical ECM or Nonesuch.

Claudia Brücken and Andrew Poppy - Another Language - Review - Stylus Magazine
On Trevor Horn’s ambitious Zang Tuum Tumb imprint in the 1980’s, Claudia Brücken and Andrew Poppy had ample opportunity for mythmaking and deconstruction alike.
As lead singer of German synth-outfit Propaganda (and later as one half of Act, with Thomas Leer), Brücken gave voice to Horn’s ongoing obsession with Abba, fashioning the brilliant A Secret Wish, a masterpiece of baroque synth-pop that was equal parts pop art and Josef K-inspired post-punk.
The pertly-named Poppy was barking up another, though not unrelated tree; a formally trained composer, he flaunted a remarkable gift for texture within polyrhythmic composition on two predominantly orchestral ZTT releases (The Beating of Wings and Alphabed), pitting him somewhere between the hardcore European minimalist school led by Louis Andriessen and early Cabaret Voltaire.

Poppy joined the ZTT label some twenty years ago, hence this commemorative collection of material, and at this time minimalist music was very much underground.
The other parallel to draw with Poppy is Cabaret Voltaire, for some of the music takes on an experimental form, fractured rhythms thrown around for dissection.
ZTT's comprehensive package includes rarities, remixes and much detail on Poppy's history with the label, and its presentation does him proud.
