These are very ancient metamorphic rocks, probably dated 300 million years ago, completely different, in their origin and their history from the vulcanic rocks present on the island and the rest of the archipelago.
In the northen slope of Zannone in fact, remains the most appreciable evidence of the ancient vegetation of the archipelago, in other places destroyed by centuries of cutting down and more recently by fires.
Zannone has no appreciable shelter and who navigates, if the weather is not beautiful, must dock in Ponza, in the harbour or in a roadstead.

 Isotur - The island
Zannone, at about 6 miles from Ponza, is the most northern island of the archipelago.
Unlike all the other islands of the group, which are volcanogenic, Zannone is rich of real geologic preciousness, very old sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, which probably date back to 300 million years ago.
Always uninhabited, Zannone has kept almost untouched its original vegetation, that is typical of the Mediterranean and gives a particularly luxuriant aspect to its landscape.

 Parco Nazionale del Circeo - Points of Interest
The Island of Zannone, an insular appendix of Parco del Circeo (from 1979), geographically belongs to the western group of the Pontine islands (Ponza, Gavi, Palmarola) which together with Ventotene and Santo Stefano make the Archipelago of the Ponziane Isles.
Although it is rather small (about 100 ha), in addition to interesting floristic and faunistic endemic species, a particularly luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation which is well preserved because of the limited historical anthropical presence with a resulting very little damage to its territory.
The area of Borgo di Fogliano, on the shores of the homonymous lake, is situated in the northern section of the Park, in the Municipality of Latina.

Ventotene Island, and the nearby islet of S. Stefano, are located on the western margin of the continental shelf of the coast between Rome and Naples.
All volcanic rocks outcropping on Ventotene and S. Stefano may be referred both for their ages and composition (< 1 Ma; Metrich et al, 1988) to the potassic association of the Roman Comagmatic Province.
