ZANU won the 1980 elections under the leadership of Robert Mugabe, and eight years later merged again with Joshua Nkomo's ZAPU to form ZANU-PF, the current governing party of the country.
Both ZANU and ZAPU formed political wings within the country (under those names) and military wings: the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) respectively to fight the struggle from neighbouring countries - ZANLA from Mozambique after the Portuguese withdrew, and ZIPRA from Zambia and other countries.

The Head Heeb: Fear of a third party, revisited
It is now three weeks since an alliance was formed uniting the ZANU dissidents with other independent candidates, but the jury's still out on whether it counts as a party - and on whether it will prove to be ZANU's nightmare or the MDC's.
ZANU is vulnerable in Beitbridge, Chiredzi North and possibly Chiredzi South, which it won with relatively small majorities in the last election, but there are at least three seats where independents might beat the MDC or draw enough of its vote to put ZANU over the top.
To achieve such a majority, ZANU has to pick up three seats, and its reverses and internal battles have it running scared enough to pull out all the stops both in the legal arena and on the ground.

For example, it quoted Zanu (Ndonga) leader Wilson Kumbula attributing his party’s defeat in Chipinge South, a seat it has held for the past 25 years, to intimidation of its supporters by ZANU PF activists, who allegedly threatened to starve the constituency’s population if they did not vote for the ruling party.
