Zao (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zao is a metalcore band from Greensburg, Pennsylvania, which is widely considered to have pioneered the boundaries of Christian metal music.
Christianity has been a key influence in the band's work, mostly because the founding members had (probably still have) a strong relationship with God, they were considered a devoted Christian band, which changed as time passed.
Zao began as an evangelical group of acquaintances with a passion for aggressive music.

The band was obviously going for a harder sound and looking to showcase the talent of their new singer, but there are times such as on Fifteen Rhema where the vocals are grating and just seem too high up in the mix even for someone who likes Weyandt's vocals.
This is a more universal standpoint for the band to relate to its audience but is obviously drawn out of their religious background and thus Zao does not abandon their beliefs on this record (as some have accused) but simply writes more personal and therefore intersting and unique lyrics.
For a band that started out playing metalcore by the numbers on the Christian hardcore scene to eventually be able to write an album like this is a fascinating testament to how much this band has developed over the years by sheer vision and dedication to what they were doing.

A staple of the annual Cornerstone festivals, Zao are perhaps the first metalcore band with roots in the Christian music scene to enjoy a credible, respected position in the mainstream halls of the hardcore and metal realms.
Zao began in 1996 when Smith gathered some friends together with the intention of starting a ministry-oriented, faith-based hardcore band similar to so-called "spirit filled" bands like Unashamed and secular acts Unbroken and Earth Crisis.
Zao toured relentlessly behind the album's release, and in 1998 produced a split with one of their touring mates, Sacramento, CA's Training for Utopia, dubbed simply The Split EP.

Zao's storied career was documented on the two-disc "The Lesser Lights Of Heaven" DVD and the luminaries of today's heavy music scene are well aware of their debt to the band.
Zao's original incarnation formed in the mid-90s with the evangelical zeal of Focused, the fervor of Earth Crisis and the image of vintage rockabilly.
When that version of the band fell apart shortly after the 1997 Cornerstone Festival, Zao as it would come to change the course of heavy music was born in the fires of creative tension.

Their heartbroken yet desperately optimistic vision, one that could only have been shaped deep in the inner entrails of the American Northeast, is delivered with all of the subtlety of a massive head trauma, the complexity of the human eye and the passion of a poet's soul.
Zao combines elements of Bay Area thrash metal, precision tuned Carcass-like speed metal and the hard-fought credibility of hardcore with a dark vision that recalls Nick Cave, Danzig or Johnny Cash, and the (perhaps even dubious) lilt of British pop music and the more avante-garde outer reaches of rock n' roll.
