  Zappeion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Zappeion Building is located in the National Gardens of Athens (Greek: Εθνικός Κήπος) in the heart of Athens.
Many important events of Greek history have taken place at the Zappeion, such as the signing of the documents formalizing Greece's accession to the European Union on January 1, 1981.
The Zappeion is currently being used as a Conference and Exhibition Center for use both publicly and privately.

The Zappeion Exhibition Hall, one of the outstanding examples of late Athenian classicism, is one of the archetypes of Greek public architecture.
On plan, the Zappeion is symmetrically arranged around a circular atrium.
The highlights include the accession of Greece to the European Economic Community on 28 May 1979, and the temporary conversion of the building to cover the needs of the Greek Presidency of the EEC in 1982, based on plans by architect Vassilis Sgoutas.

The Zappeion Hall was built in the middle of the last century by the national benefactor Evangelos Zappas and was inaugurated in 1888.
The first plans for the Zappeion were drafted by the Viennese architect Theophilus Hansen, but two Greek architects, L. Kaftatzoglou and A. Theophilas, worked on the final draft.
The Zappeion Hall is surrounded by some of the finest buildings in Athens, and for many decades the Zappeion served the original purpose for which it was built.
