Tezeta: The Chronicle of the Emperor Zara Yaqob (1434-1468)
During the reign of our King Zara Yaqob, there was in the whole land of Ethiopia a great peace and a great tranquility, for the King taught justice and faith, and he can be compared to the prophets and apostles for the excellence of his predictions and his doctrines.
When our King, Zara Yaqob was returning with contentment in his heart, priests from all parts came before him chanting canticles, as well as the monks of Dabra Libanos, who had previously sent him their wishes that he might be victorious with their prior Abba Endreyas.
Our King Zara Yaqob conferred on the princesses, his daughters, the government of Ethiopia and, during his reign, there had not been another Belit Wadad except for Amda Sayton, who was demoted soon after his nomination and condemned to exile for his crimes against the King.

 The Ecole Glossary
Perhaps the greatest of mediæval Ethiopian emperors was Constantine I Zara Yaqob ("Seed of Jacob"), who reigned from 1434-1468.
A theologian-king, Zara Yaqob pursued his entwined religious and political agendas with enormous but sometimes destructive energy; tireless in his defense of Orthodoxy, he nevertheless introduced dramatic innovations in Church life and policy.
As the appearence of such a translation suggests, Zara Yaqob was extremely interested in Western Christianity and the expanding powers of Europe, which he saw as potential allies against Islam.

Zara Yaqob Christian zealousness demonstrates the increased importance of Christianity in Ethiopian kingship.
In addition, although Zara Yaqob killed many innocent people and disenfranchised many provincial rulers on way to greater centralization, he is still held in high regard for zealous piety.

Zara Yaqob - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British expert on Ethiopia, Edward Ullendorff, stated that Zara Yaqob "was unquestionably the greatest ruler Ethiopia had seen since Ezana, during the heyday of Aksumite power, and none of his successors on the throne – excepted only the emperors Menelik II and Haile Selassie – can be compared to him."
When a conspiracy involving one of his Bitwodeds came to light, Zara Yaqob reacted by appointing his two daughters, Medhan Zamada and Berhan Zamada, to these two offices.
Edward Ullendorff also emphasizes the Emperor's importance in Ethiopian literature, mentioning that Zara Yaqob was the author of two important theological works.

Wonders of the African World - Episodes - The Holy Land - Wonders
The conquests of Solomonid emperors such as Amda Seyon and Zara Yaqob brought many Ethiopians into the Christian empire, and the custom of the priesthood passing from father to son in isolated villages meant that Ethiopian Christianity was often a mixture of ancient African cults and Christian doctrine.
Zara Yaqob in particular was alarmed by what he saw as the spread of magic and idolatry, and attempted to impose a more exacting sense of Christian obedience.
As well as promoting his cult of the Virgin Mary, he used holymen trained in the great monasteries to spread a Christian faith that would serve as a basis for imperial control.

 The Crown Council of Ethiopia
Emperor Zara Yaqob, however, reinstated an ancient tradition when he went in 1434 to be crowned at the ancient city of Axum, and thus invested the monarchy, as Taddesse Tamrat
It states that the monarch, on reaching the vicinity of Axum, sent a message to the priests of the city, stating that he was ‘to celebrate the royal ceremonies in front of my mother, Seyon, tabernacle of the God of Israel, as did my fathers [ie: ancestors] David and Solomon.”
But Zara Yaqob’s revival of the tradition of a coronation in Axum was by no means absolute, and Ethiopia reverted to the pattern of choosing the enthronement site based on other political or personal exigencies of the day.

More significantly, for our discussion of today, he appealed to the Spanish monarch to send him skilled artisans.
Affonso's reply is not extant, but we know that he later wrote to Emperor Zara Yaqob (1434-1468), promising to send artisans, provided only that their safe arrival could be assured.
This was evidently an important matter of concern, for he observed that on a previous occasion, apparently during the reign of Yeshaq, thirteen Spaniards had died on their journey to or from Ethiopia.
