Topic: Zauq

Zauq, a long forgotten poet -DAWN Magazine; June 25, 2006
Of course there was a time when Zauq was held in high esteem not only in the Mughal court but in the whole Urdu world.
During that brief period Zauq rose to the heights of name and fame, acted as the mentor of Bahadur Shah Zafar, and was acknowledged as a great qasida writer.
The book on Zauq may be seen as a product of this feeling of allegiance to that ancestor poet, though much of his research on him came in consequence of his research on Ghalib.

the biography of Zauq - life story
Zauq was a prominent contemporary of Ghalib and in the history of Urdu poetry the rivalry of the two poets is quite well known.
During his lifetime Zauq was more popular than Ghalib for the critical values in those days were mainly confined to judging a piece of poetry on the basis of usage of words, phrases and idioms.
Zauq’s reputation in Urdu poetry is because of his eulogies that reflect his command over the language and his expertise in composing poetry in extremely difficult meters.

The complexity of his verse is usually ascribed to the influence of his mentor, Shaikh Ibrahim Zauq (1790-1854), one of the greatest figures in the literary circles of Delhi.
Zauq, who served the King for much of his life, and who was rewarded with the grand title of Khaqani-e-Hind and a commensurately small stipend, which never exceeded 100 rupees even when he was at the height of his career, was born to a military family of little note.
As the poet laureate, Zauq was frequently called upon to write qasidas and excelled in the art, no doubt inspired by his genuine admiration for Sauda.

Zauq however, is now assured of a befitting memorial, thanks to the efforts of various urdu promotion bodies and the Supreme Court, which ordered clearance of encroachments.

On the marriage ceremony of Jawan Bakht, the youngest son of the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Ghalib wrote a “sehra” (an encomium poem on the groom’s chaplet).
Zafar felt that through this insinuative verse Ghalib had disparaged his mentor, Zauq, and asked him, who happened to be there, to write a “sehra”.
Zauq complained to Zafar, who called Ghalib and asked him to read the verse he had written on that day.
