Zauschneria (Epilobium canum) is a species of willowherb, native to dry slopes and in chaparral of western North America.
The name reflects that in the past it used to be treated in a distinct genus Zauschneria, but modern studies have shown that it is best placed within the genus Epilobium.
As befits their origin, they prefer to be cultivated in well-drained soil exposed to full sun but protected from the wind, and need little watering.

 Wildscaping/Plants/Epilobium species
California Fuchsias (as Zauschnerias are commonly known) cover large stretches of our garden, filling in gaps between larger plants and otherwise spreading randomly around the property.
The plants will turn brown in the winter, at which point you can give them a severe haircut, and the process will repeat next year – on a larger scale.
We have over a dozen species and selections of Zauschneria (also known as Epilobium), and frankly, we've lost track of exactly who is who.

In our country you search this plant in the nursery catalogue under the denomination 'Zauschneria californica', while the synonym latin denomination is 'Epilobium canum'.
As species you find on internet mostly the sub-varieties'Epilobium canum ssp canum', 'Epilobium canum ssp augustifolium' and 'Epilobium canum ssp latifolium'.

Polly, I have no personal experience, but the Sunset Western Garden Book lists several species of each of the genera that you mention.
According to this reference any of the Agastache species should be OK here and none of the Zauschneria species are adapted to the low desert.
I would guess that the Agastaches would need afternoon shade in the low desert.
