By the turn of the twentieth century Zavala County was gaining a reputation for fertile soil, mild climate, and an abundance of pure water; ranchers recognized the potential for irrigated farming on their land and speculated about future farming communities.
The population of Zavala County remained static between 1930 (10,349) and 1982 (12,000) and reached its peak in 1960 (12,696).

Zavala County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas.
Zavala is named for Lorenzo de Zavala, Mexican politician, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and first vice president of the Republic of Texas.
In the county, the population was spread out with 34.10% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 18.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who were 65 years of age or older.

A colonizer and statesman, Manuel Lorenzo Justiniano de Zavala was one of the most talented and capable of the many native Mexicans involved in Texas' struggle for independence from Mexico.
After Santa Anna's capture at the Battle of San Jacinto, de Zavala and Secretary of Treasury Bailey Hardeman were commissioned to accompany Santa Anna to Mexico to negotiate a permanent treaty, but outraged soldiers of the Texas army circumvented this plan and detained Santa Anna for several months.
De Zavala county was formed in 1858 and named in his honor.

In 1963, Crystal City, Texas was also the location where the first Mexican-American political revolt took place in Texas, as the Mexican-American majority elected fellow Mexican-Americans to the city council, led by Juan Cornejo, a local Teamsters Union business agent.
In the late 1960s, Crystal City, Texas would become the location of continued civil rights activism among its Mexican-American majority population and the birthplace of the third party political movement known as La Raza Unida Party under the leadership of José Angel Gutiérrez.
La Raza Unida and related organizations won election to most offices in Crystal City and Zavala County, Texas in the period between 1969 and 1980 when the party declined at the local level.

Greg Lasley and I attempted to survey the Odonates of Atascosa County Tuesterday, 2 September 2003, but were stymied by heavy rains.
We were in seach of new dragonfly records and found and photographed a number of them (photographed 25 out of 30 species seen total; of those 17 were potentially new).
