South Georgia and its associated islands, which consist of the island of South Georgia Island, which is by far the largest island in the territory, the islands that immediately surround the main island of South Georgia and some remote and isolated islets west and east-southeast of the main island of South Georgia Island.
The climate in the islands is variable, with mostly westerly winds throughout the year interspersed with periods of calm; nearly all precipitation falls as snow.

To the NW of Zavodovski Island is the Protector Shoal a submarine volcano.
The island was recaptured by British forces on 25 April (Operation Paraquet).

No landings are made on these cruises, but the glaciers and mountains reflect beautifully in the water and the serene scene is a highlight for many visitors.
The island has an interesting history - it was a base for several early exploratory missions - and is still a disputed territory between the Argentinians and the British, however nowadays they seem to get along.
The volcano is still very active and its eruptions have caused evacuations and considerable damage to the stations there (during the 1920-21 whaling season the harbour water boiled and stripped the paint off the ships' hulls).

Unfortunately the upper slopes of Visokoi were obscured by cloud, however Zavodovski Island, on account of its lower height was visible to the summit.
Closer inspection of the lower slopes of the southern aspect of this volcanic island showed it to be covered in thousands of tiny fl dots — soon it dawned upon us that what we were looking at was an enormous colony of Chinstrap penguins numbering many tens of thousands.
By lunch we had cleared the islands and were headed onwards towards King Edward Point (KEP) in calm seas to pick up personnel and take on board drums of waste.

This is the Scotia Arc, however, and it is a region of geological activity (you can practically see it happening when you look at a chart of the area) so it won't be surprising if it turns out to be rough bottom.
Of course, the shallow waters surrounding these islands are literally the slopes of active volcanoes, and so they are steep and rocky also.
