At the time of its release, Zaxxon was unique as it was the first game to employ isometric projection, something of a three-quarters viewing perspective.
A popular game, Zaxxon was ported to almost all home computer and video game console systems between 1982 and 1985.
It is similar to Zaxxon, but it is the first (and last) Zaxxon game to use full 3D graphics.

Zaxxon, released in 1982 by Sega/Gremlin (with a sequel Super Zaxxon released the next year), is a unique shooting game -- it simulates 3D by using an isometric three-quarters perspective.
Zaxxon has a fixed scroll speed, so you have to be alert for barriers, flying above & below them, yet still shooting enough fuel tanks, radar dishes, and rockets as necessary.
Super Zaxxon featured far faster scrolling than the original, and as a result the game was just too difficult and not as much fun.

Zaxxon inspired the spinoff - actually it was more of a conversion kit - Super Zaxxon, which seemed to add little to the play of the game but mainly offered changes to the graphics set - including the incomprehensible transformation of Zaxxon itself from a fearsome robot to an animè-like dragon character.
Zaxxon was later adapted much more faithfully on home computer systems such as the Apple II.

From: Los Angeles, CA The reason I think the Activision catalog was the best for the 2600 was that they didn't try to just port arcade games (although several of their games are veiled ports of obscure coin-op titles from the mid 70s).
But since the Zaxxon arcade game did it, the 2600 port was going to either have to make it happen by some miracle, or just go with vertical scrolling, which is why they went with the latter.
A Side scrolling zaxxon could be done, but it would be even harder to judge your height, but it be more true to the arcade.

Zaxxon was my favorite, not even a close second, arcade game.
I was such a fanatical nerd that I used to improve on the crude artwork he did for the game (you know saying "it doesn't look like that") until I realized that he was purposefully doing a poor job, knowing that I would fix it up for him.
Zaxxon was the first video game that made me dream about it.

Super Zaxxon on the Atari 8bit computers reminds me of CV Zaxxon -- it's got all the aspects of the game but with small average-looking objects and shoddy scrolling.
Missiles rise from the ground, the Zaxxon robot is far more challenging and looks just like he did in the arcade version, and you get altimeter control in the space section.
Second, as to the arcade version of Zaxxon...Tempest, the boss in Zaxxon (the Robot) was HARD to beat in the arcade version.

I'd never written a game before (ever) and the 2003 Retro Remakes competition made me think of writing a retro game, there are many Pacman and Asteroid clones so I was surprised that no-one had tried to remake Zaxxon.

The Regulate options should really only change the 'smoothness' of scrolling and should be the same on most modern computers, if you find that these actually change the game speed then I'd like to know about it.

It appears that this game is supposed to be light blue like the bottom picture, but it's fairly common to find it faded (which makes it appear grey like the top picture).

Section 4 is where the player must defeat the "Super Zaxxon dragon", a harder version of the classic "Zaxxon" boss, faster moving to say the least.
His strategy incorporates a balance between point acumulation and safety, which in a game like "Super Zaxxon" is quite possibly the best strategy of all to employ.

You only have a limited time to hit Zaxxon in his weak spot several times before he launches a missile at you that can not be avoided.
Although the arcade game was a whole lot of fun, because of the primitive graphics in this version, it is difficult to figure out where you are relative to everything else in the vertical direction, so it can be frustrating to play.

Originally sold as a conversion kit so arcade operators could freshen up their year-old Zaxxon machines, Super Zaxxon really did nothing more than swap out the graphics set and increased the speed of the game phenomenally.
It survives thanks to MAME - but if Sega would ever wake up and realize that Zaxxon is still a viable property that could be exploited even more effectively on modern-day consoles and PCs...well, I don't even think I need to finish that sentence.

On the top board (CPU) board, chip U55 74259 pin 11 is an output that drives the flip screen signal.
Note, this hack will force the screen always to be flipped, so if you operate the board in cocktail mode it will not flip back for player 2.
