  Zdenek Fibich - 3. Symphonie e-moll op. 53
Zdenek Fibich was one of the most eminent Czech composers to emerge in the shadow of Antonín Dvorák, and like him had a special gift for easy-flowing melody.
During the summer of 1898 Fibich recovered from a serious scarlet fever in the countryside at the village of Trebestovice, near Sadská, close to the river Elbe, where he orchestrated his Third Symphony, completing the score on 9 July.
Fibich’s Third Symphony was premiered on 7 March 1899 in Prague by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the composer.

 Fibiger.NET - Zdenec Fibich
Together with B. Smetana and A. Dvorak, Zdenek Fibich is the most significant representative of the founding Czech music generation of the second half of the 19th Century.
Fibich had been enamoured with opera since the time of his youth (Bukovin, Blanik, Nevesta mesinska - The Bride of Messina, Boure - The Storm).
A very important part of Fibich's legacy includes melodramatic works in which he considered the consequences of Wagner's principles and, in this way, created, by the use of techniques of symptomatic motives, the greatest of all international literature and the most perfected scenic melodrama in the vast trilogy, Hippodamia.

FIBICH Orch. works   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) had the misfortune of living at the same time as his famous Czech compatriots Anton Dvorák (1841-1904) and Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) both of whom expressed more of the Czech national spirit than did Fibich.
Strongly influenced by Schumann and Wagner particularly in his earlier works, Fibich wrote prolifically during his short life composing operas, chamber and orchestral music and "melodramas"— plays performed to a background of musical accompaniment.
Víteslav Novák's symphonic poem on the same subject, written twelve years after Fibich's, is a more passionate, dramatic treatment (there's a fine recording with Libor Pesek and the BBC Philharmonic on Chandos), but Fibich makes his points in an arresting way.

Today we look at the least known of the founding trilogy of Czech classical music in the 19th century, that's Zdenek Fibich, who is now remembered very much in the shadow of his better known contemporaries, Smetana and Dvorak.
It is for male reciter and full orchestra, and it shows Fibich really at his best at tone-painting and mood-setting.

Zdenêk Fibich (1850-1900) falls somewhere between Smetana and Dvorák in the Czech national school, and they along with Brahms, Schumann and Wagner were major influences.
In many ways he preempted innovations by Smetana, including the first use of a Polka in place of a Scherzo in a String Quartet.
Fibich's true gift was melody and this is most apparent in his late piano works, called Moods, Impressions, and Reminiscences.
