Chara was born and raised in Trencin, Slovakia.
Chara wanted to familiarize himself with the North American game and to adjust to the smaller ice surface, having been selected 56th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
Chara credits several of his junior coaches in Slovakia and Stan Butler in Prince George as being the people who were most influential in his development as a player, which has seen him rise all the way to a regular performer in the NHL and to his first NHL All-Star performance in 2003.

Chara had no problems with the ruling and said he'd do it again if the same situation arose.
What happens with me is people basically suggest that I called down the line to send Zdeno Chara to fight at the end of a game when you know there's a $10,000 (fine) and a game suspension.

I do agree that Chara brings more to the game than just numbers and he has played more minutes and he is the leader of the Senators team but I think when it comes voting those 'extras' don't always get fully considered.
Chara should have a better +/- because he plays on a better team but an objective analysis of the +/- statistics to attempt to factor out teammates puts McCabe and Chara on similar ground.
Wade Redden and Zdeno Chara are both great defensmen, but for them to be 1-2 in the voting is kind of ridiculous.
