ICT [2005/05/12]  Zealotry: A growing danger to American freedom
The ''Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith'' was previously known as the ''Office of the Inquisition'' in the Catholic Church.
Among the worst of many excesses of zealotry in Catholic history was the Inquisition, when tens of thousands of people were tortured, burned to death and expelled from their home countries and their properties confiscated on a ''religious'' basis.
Religious fervor that borders on zealotry, always suspect in a democratic society, is perhaps tolerable if encompassed in the much larger open-society discourse, bent on real goals of productivity and prosperity for all citizens of the nation.

This is the interesting case, because a real case of zealotry is by definition one in which you bypass or ignore the rabbis.
That is why I have always claimed - even going back to the typical cases of zealotry - that it is an act in which there are three parties involved: the aggressor, the victim and the religious authorities.
It is a very tricky job and this subtlety is now much more acutely realised by the rabbis than before, because now they are aware of the possible results: one of their students could take it seriously.

The mind of a religious zealot is essentially the mind of a voluntary slave.

It should be clearly understood that religion and zealotry are never compatible.

This report from the Associated Press would have the reader believe that the role of "zealotry" is a motivating factor in Islamic terrorism distinct from nationalism and a sense of humiliation.
The dots, which the mainstream media refuses to connect, are that all three factors (zealotry - zeal for Islamic supremacy, nationalism - a world dominated by the supremacy of Islam, and humiliation - the recognition that Islam hasn't achieved supremacy) comprise the jihadist motivation.
A rare jailhouse interview with the would-be suicide bomber revealed a common thread running through the rising worldwide phenomenon: Most attackers are driven not by poverty or ignorance, but by a lethal mix of nationalism, zealotry and humiliation.
