| | Oscherwitz: Bringing on the noise: Zebda, fusion and the musical politics of métissage (Site not responding. Last check: ) |
 | | Zebda, who hail from Toulouse, exploded onto the French musical scene in the 1990s with their fusion of rap, raï, reggae, ska, rock, Andalusian guitar, French accordian, and classical violin. |
 | | This mapping and analysis of Zebda's music will explore the logic behind the particular combination of musical styles within specific songs, and will analyze the way in which the musical composition forms a counterpoint to the group's lyrical content. |
 | | Through my analysis, I will interrogate the formation and articulation of Zebda's particular banlieue identity, including the ways in which their music challenges dominant-culture characterizations of the banlieue as urban space, and the ways in which this music advocates for social and political equality through the erasure of racial and class discrimination. |
