Generally carved on large seals with relatively short inscriptions, the zebu motif is found almost exclusively at the largest cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa.
The rarity of zebu seals is curious because the humped bull is a recurring theme in many of the ritual and decorative arts of the Indus region, appearing on painted pottery and as figurines long before the rise of cities and continuing on into later historical times.
The zebu bull may symbolize the leader of the herd, whose strength and virility protects the herd and ensures the procreation of the species or it stands for a sacrificial animal.

Production of two composite beef cattle herds of Zebu x Criollo Yacumeño and Charolais x Zebu x Criollo Yacumeño on ...
The foundation herd was composed of approximately 25% Charolais, 43% Zebu and 32% Criollo Yacumeño genes.
Adjusted mean pregnancy of the Zebu elite herd (Plasse et al 1993) and the Criollo Yacumeño elite herd (Verde et al 1993) at the same ranch from 1967 through 1982 were 80.6% and 86.6% respectively.
This comparison of the pregnancy percentages of the composite herds with the other herds existing at the ranch, might be somewhat biased since the data sets belong to somewhat different time periods and the size of the ranch makes it difficult to manage all herds under the same pasture conditions.

Zebu x Criollo cows at this ranch and in Turipaná, Colombia, had a mean advantage of 5% over Zebu (Plasse 1983).
Since no control Zebu herd was maintained along with the crossbreds, the only way to compare their performance with an alternative population would be with the calves of the selected Zebu herd kept on the same ranch between 1967 and 1982 and whose 4363 weaning weights were published by Galdo et al (1992).
In the present study no Zebu control group was available, but a comparison with published data from a Zebu herd at the same ranch indicated that Herd A and Herd B had a 1.8 and 2.5% advantage in age-adjusted weaning weight, which we do not consider to be economically important.

It is useful to quantify the extent to which cattle are affected by nutrition, disease or other environmental factors, especially when large fluctuations in the quantity and quality of available forage occur, as they do in seasonally dry tropical and subtropical areas.
In the method described here for Bos indicus (zebu) cattle, nine scores are used in which the three main conditions - (fat [F], medium [M], and lean[L]) - are subdivided into three categories.
